Pilea peperomioides ‘Sugar’ – A Sweet and Stunning Spin on the Chinese Money Plant

If you’re already charmed by the round, coin-like leaves of the classic Chinese Money Plant, prepare to fall head over heels for Pilea peperomioides ‘Sugar’. This rare and delightful variety brings all the beloved qualities of the original—compact size, playful form, and easy care—but with a dusting of silver-white variegation that gives each leaf a frosted, sugar-coated look.

‘Sugar’ is soft, sweet, and stylish—a true collector’s gem that stands out in any room. Best of all, it’s as approachable as it is beautiful, making it a perfect choice for both beginners and seasoned plant lovers alike.

Let’s dive into what makes this special cultivar shine—and how to help it thrive in your home.

What Makes Pilea ‘Sugar’ So Special?

‘Sugar’ earns its name from the light silvery streaks and patches that decorate its bright green leaves. This subtle, frosted variegation almost looks like the leaves have been dusted with powdered sugar—giving the plant a soft sparkle in the light.

Each leaf is unique, with some showing a soft gradient from white to green, while others are boldly marbled. Combined with the signature round leaf shape and upright stems of classic Pilea, ‘Sugar’ has a cheerful and contemporary look that’s right at home on desks, bookshelves, and windowsills.

Light Needs: Bright and Indirect

To maintain that gorgeous silver variegation, Pilea ‘Sugar’ needs bright, indirect light.

  • Ideal spot: Near an east- or north-facing window, or a few feet back from a bright south- or west-facing window with filtered light.

  • Avoid direct, harsh sunlight—it can scorch the delicate leaves or fade the variegation.

  • Not enough light? Leaves may become smaller, darker, and lose their silver patterns.

  • In darker rooms or winter months, a full-spectrum grow light can help maintain growth and color.

Rotate your plant regularly to keep it growing evenly in all directions.

Watering: Moist but Never Wet

Like other Pileas, ‘Sugar’ prefers a moderate watering routine. It likes the soil to dry slightly between waterings—but not completely bone dry.

  • Check the top 1–2 inches of soil; when dry, it’s time to water.

  • Water thoroughly and allow excess water to drain. Never let the plant sit in standing water.

  • Reduce watering in cooler seasons, when the plant’s growth naturally slows.

Watch your plant’s leaves—they’ll let you know how it’s feeling:

  • Drooping or curling? It’s thirsty.

  • Yellowing or mushy? That’s usually overwatering.

Temperature and Humidity: A Cozy Indoor Friend

Pilea ‘Sugar’ is happy in most average household conditions, but there are a few preferences that help it thrive.

  • Ideal temperature: 65°F to 80°F (18°C to 27°C)

  • Keep it away from cold drafts, radiators, or air conditioning vents.

  • Humidity: Average humidity is fine, but slightly higher levels (40–60%) can boost leaf health.

  • If your home is dry, especially in winter, group it with other plants or use a pebble tray for added humidity.

Soil and Potting: Light, Well-Draining, and Airy

Pilea ‘Sugar’ loves a loose, breathable potting mix. This helps keep the roots healthy and avoids sogginess.

Use a blend like:

  • 2 parts high-quality potting mix

  • 1 part perlite

  • 1 part coconut coir or orchid bark for added structure

Choose a pot with good drainage holes, and avoid heavy or compacted soil. Repot every 1–2 years, ideally in spring, when the plant is waking up and ready to grow.

Feeding: Gentle Nourishment for Steady Growth

This plant doesn’t need much fertilizer, but a little goes a long way during the growing season.

  • Use a balanced liquid fertilizer (such as 10-10-10), diluted to half strength.

  • Feed once a month from spring through early fall.

  • Skip feeding in winter, when growth naturally slows down.

Overfeeding can lead to salt buildup or leggy growth, so always err on the side of less.

Growth Habit: Upright, Compact, and Joyful

Pilea ‘Sugar’ grows with a clean, upright form. Its central stem sends out rounded leaves on long petioles, creating a shape that’s often compared to a little umbrella or satellite dish.

As the plant matures, it may develop a visible stem or “trunk,” giving it even more character. If it gets too tall or uneven, you can prune it gently to encourage a fuller shape.

Propagation: It’s a Gift That Keeps on Giving

Like its non-variegated cousin, ‘Sugar’ is famous for producing pups—small baby plants that pop up around the base.

To propagate:

  1. Wait until the pup is at least 2–3 inches tall.

  2. Gently dig it out, making sure to get some roots.

  3. Plant in fresh, moist soil and keep in a bright, warm spot.

  4. Water lightly and watch it take off!

You can also propagate from stem cuttings, especially if you’re pruning to shape the main plant.

Common Issues and How to Fix Them

Pilea ‘Sugar’ is generally low-maintenance, but here are a few common concerns:

Brown Leaf Edges or Tips

  • Often caused by dry air, inconsistent watering, or salt buildup from fertilizer.

  • Try increasing humidity and watering more evenly.

Drooping Leaves

  • Usually from underwatering, but can also be from transplant shock or a sudden change in light.

Loss of Variegation

  • Caused by insufficient light. Move the plant to a brighter location with indirect sun.

Pests (uncommon but possible)

  • Watch for spider mites or aphids. Treat early with neem oil, insecticidal soap, or a good rinse under lukewarm water.

Styling Tips: Let ‘Sugar’ Shine

This little charmer brings a playful yet elegant vibe to any space. Here’s how to show it off:

  • Place it in a simple white or pastel pot to enhance the silvery tones.

  • Display it on a windowsill, bookshelf, or plant stand for maximum light exposure.

  • Group with other variegated or tropical plants for a designer look.

  • Use it as a gift plant—its round leaves and soft variegation make it a symbol of luck and sweetness.

Its tidy shape and subtle sparkle make it a perfect addition to minimal, modern, or cozy home styles.

A Plant That’s as Sweet as Its Name

Pilea peperomioides ‘Sugar’ is a plant that wins you over instantly. It’s compact, cheerful, and easy to grow—but with an elegant twist that makes it feel truly special. Whether you’re growing it for the soft silver variegation, the easy propagation, or simply the joy of something beautiful in your home, this plant delivers.

Every new leaf feels like a little surprise, and every pup is a reminder that growth and joy often come in small packages.

So if you're ready to add a little sweetness—and style—to your indoor garden, ‘Sugar’ is ready to glow for you.

Great pillow case from a company that cares!
Color: White, Size: Body
The Snuggle-Pedic Body Pillow Case is GREAT and is the perfect pillow case for their body pillow! Feels exactly like the great material that's on the body pillow (soft and breathable) -- and it fits the pillow perfectly! I love that there's a zipper on it as I don't have to deal with the pillow slipping out of the case at all. The case fits perfectly and is the perfect case for the pillow! I read some other reviews where people said they didn't love that the tag/label was on the opposite side of the zipper on the case. But for me this was a non-issue. I cut the tag off and now there's no issue at all. :) Oh, and I have to give a shout out to Snuggle-Pedic and their company....they are awesome! They did offer me a free case in exchange for an honest review. But this isn't what I think they are awesome for. I find them to be a stand up company that is truly there to support their customers! They include a little note when you get the pillow and pillow case giving you their phone number and letting them know they are here to help if we have any questions. And they send an email as well saying they are available if we have any questions and they gave suggestions on how to care for their products. They are quick to respond and truly lovely people. I'm a sucker for supporting good companies....companies that actually truly care about their customers...and this company is that! I highly recommend this product :)

Excellent Customer Service and the Cover is Perfect
Color: White, Size: Queen
I have already purchased 2 of the pillows that go with the Snuggle-Pedic Zipper Removable Pillow Cover. Neither of the pillows I purchased had a zipper on the pillow cases. I bought my pillows at different times, the oldest pillow's case recently didn't do well in the laundry and got somewhat frayed. Not in too horrible condition, but I'm rather OCD. I admit I panicked a bit, I love my pillows! But then I discovered they sell the pillow cases with zippers that would allow me to replace my pillow case and not lose my awesome pillow. Perfect! I bought one. And, I am happy to say, that's just the beginning of my review. A day after purchasing the seller contacted me and explained how the pillow case worked. I was very pleased and grateful - glad I didn't have to struggle with it then rush back and beg for info. Nope, they had it all laid out and made it super easy. I got my pillow case, replaced my torn one and my Snuggle-Pedic pillow is good as new! Excellent service! Excellent Products! I highly recommend them. Oh, and if you haven't tried the Snuggle-Pedic Pillows you are seriously missing out! As a side sleeper, I couldn't live without mine now! Lanette

Fits like a glove!
Color: White, Size: Queen
I recently had to buy new latex pillows because our old ones were beginning to shred after too many years. The old ones had a really nice cover on them that they came with and lasted as long as the pillows. The new queen size pillows came with a cover meant for a king-size and they were super thin and flimsy. The manufacturer tried to tell me it's so they could shrink in the wash. You can imagine the review I left! I looked at almost every cover Amazon had on the site and decided to bite the bullet and spend more on these. I'm really glad I did. They fit the pillows like a glove and keep the pillowcases from trying to slip off during the night because they're not slick. They're not sticky either and it is easy to put on the pillowcase. They are quite a bit thicker than any other cover I have ever had and do tend to change the density of the pillow just a bit because of it. I'm not having a problem with the change and it is very minor. I will absolutely buy this case again if the need should arise. I can't comment on the allergy stuff because we have latex pillows, to begin with so no allergens. I see people complaining about the zipper and just can't quite understand that but perhaps they changed it before I bought mine. I do have to recommend putting the zipper end into the pillowcase first to protect you from feeling a zipper at night but I do this with any protector not just this one.

Love
Color: White, Size: Body
I love, Love, LOVE the pillow this case is for. I cannot sleep without it. It is seriously one of my most prized possessions. I love that I can throw it in a (big) washing machine whenever I get grossed out about dust mites. However, throwing an extra big ass pillow in the wash is not always easy and takes too dang long sometimes. Plus, I need my lover, I mean pillow, to last as long as possible, so this pillowcase was a necessity. Fits like a glove, uses the same material as the pillow, which is soft and glorious, and is way way way easier to wash. A must have for your pillow. Update: After a little over two years of daily use and regular washes, the zipper broke. The pillow itself is still going strong, and everything else about the case is still in near perfect shape.
