American Gold Rush Black-Eyed Susan (Rudbeckia 'American Gold Rush')

If you love the classic look of black-eyed Susans but want a cleaner plant that stays attractive through the season, American Gold Rush delivers. It forms a tidy mound and covers itself in golden blooms for weeks in midsummer through early fall. The flowers bring reliable color when many perennials pause, and the plant holds up well in humid, wet summers. Expect a strong pollinator draw and an easy, repeatable performance in beds, borders, and large plantings.

Distinctive Features

American Gold Rush stands out for its compact, domed habit and narrow, lightly fuzzy foliage that helps it resist the leaf spotting that can make other rudbeckias look tired by late summer. Bright golden-yellow daisies with dark centers rise above the foliage from July to September, often continuing with color into frost. Mature plants typically reach about 22 to 26 inches tall and spread 40 to 44 inches wide, creating a broad, full clump that reads as lush without being floppy.

Growing Conditions

  • Sun: Full sun is best, but it also performs well in partial shade.
  • Soil: Average, well-drained soil is ideal, and established plants tolerate a range of garden soils.
  • Water: Water regularly during establishment, then provide moderate moisture, with some drought tolerance once rooted.
  • USDA Zones: Hardy in zones 4 to 9.
  • Spacing: Space plants about 30 to 40 inches apart to allow the broad clump to fill in without crowding.

Ideal Uses

  • Focal Point: Use one or a small cluster as a midsummer focal point where its bright blooms can anchor a mixed perennial bed.
  • Mass Planting: Plant in drifts for a long, unified band of golden color that reads well from a distance.
  • Perennial Borders: Tuck into sunny borders for dependable late-season brightness and a full, mounded silhouette.
  • Pollinator Gardens: Add to bee and butterfly plantings for steady nectar and a strong seasonal presence.
  • Large Containers: Use in oversized pots where the compact, domed habit and long bloom season can carry summer displays.

Low Maintenance Care

  • Deadheading: Remove spent flowers to encourage continued blooming and a cleaner look, or leave some late blooms for seasonal interest.
  • Watering: Deep water during dry spells, especially in the first season, to build a strong root system.
  • Fertilizing: Use a light spring feeding or compost topdressing, as rich soils can push soft growth.
  • Cutback: Cut stems back in late fall or early spring to refresh the clump and make room for new growth.
  • Dividing: Divide every few years in spring if the center thins, or to increase your planting.

Why Choose American Gold Rush Black-Eyed Susan?

  • Season-Long Presence: A broad, full clump stays attractive while delivering weeks of mid to late-season color.
  • Cleaner Foliage: Improved resistance to common leaf spotting helps the plant look better deep into summer.
  • Pollinator Value: Flowers consistently attract bees and butterflies when the garden needs them most.
  • Design Flexibility: Works equally well in modern mass plantings, cottage borders, and mixed perennial beds.
  • Reliable Hardiness: Returns dependably in zones 4 to 9 with straightforward care.

American Gold Rush is an easy way to get the classic black-eyed Susan look with a more polished, garden-ready finish. Give it sun, reasonable drainage, and room to spread, and it will reward you with a dense mound of golden flowers year after year. It is a strong choice for anyone who wants dependable late-season color that still looks intentional when summer weather is at its toughest.

Great Value for Cool Thigh Protection
Color: 02-multicolour (4-pack), Size: XX-Large
For the price, I'm not sure there are better women's boxer shortlettes anywhere. I've tried more expensive brands, and for quality and cooling, these are right up there. I have other bamboo viscose undies that still get gross when I get sweaty in the summer, but these, with the large mesh panel, really help wick away a lot of that moisture, keeping you feeling dryer and cooler. I find that the leg openings are comfortable and don't roll up! and the waist band doesn't dig, nor does it roll down. These do not provide any compression, and I wasn't looking for any. I just wanted some cooling, thigh protecting women's boxers that wouldn't break the bank. These are them! Bonus- I've washed them and put them in the dryer (following their instructions), and they haven't shrunk; they look about the same and are nice and soft.

Great for the entire family but expensive
So far so good. The brand of boxers we had been buying changed their style and construction so we needed to find an alternative. These have held up well so far to multiple weeks of frequent washing and wearing from the entire family. We did size up from the usual 6/M we normally buy and ordered large to prevent the legs from rolling up which worked out great. Our daughter likes the length and how soft the fabric is for wearing under skirts and gym shorts and liners stay put without moving or leaking as another reviewer mentioned. Our son says they are comfortable and fit well being just supportive enough without being constrictive. We all agree that there seems to be not enough fabric in the back as they tend to be much tighter across the backside than the front and that also causes the waist band to ride lower in the back than the front. These have better seam placement than some brands we tried with no seam across the lady bits and no seam down the middle of the back side so they are more much comfortable but the cost is also much higher and that is why we're only giving it 4 stars. These will stay in the rotation until we find something cheaper that both us and the kids like.

Pregnant lady review! Soft, comfortable, cool.
Color: 03-multicolour (4-pack), Size: Large
So soft, comfortable and cool. I'm pregnant and I've gained weight in my legs. I love wearing dresses but my thighs were rubbing together too much. These are perfect to wear under dresses. I also wear them under my bibs at work and it keeps me from getting overheated but I don't have to worry about whether or not my underwear show since they just look like shorts. I wish these came in maternity. I just keep them below my belly. I'll be buying more for sure.

I want to live in these
Color: 01-multicolour (4-pack), Size: Medium
I bought 4 different sets of new underwear. Unfortunately these came last. It’s unfortunate, because if they had come first I would have cancelled all my other orders or returned them and ordered more of these. I never want to wear anything else ever again; these are the comfiest undies I’ve ever owned, I want to live in them. I can wear them under pretty much anything except leggings or very tight pants (but let’s be honest, I don’t wear those anyway.) They are incredibly soft and breathable, they wash well, don’t roll, keep my thighs from rubbing, are comfy to sleep in, and the colors were true to the photo. Just a heads up, they are on the thin side and just a bit see through in the rear. I’m 5’5” 140lbs and the mediums fit perfectly, they go about mid-thigh.

Extremely comfortable
Color: 02-multicolour (4-pack), Size: X-Large
These are by far the softest and most comfortable underwear I have ever owned. The leg portion absolutely does roll up as so many others have mentioned, however, I did not find that to be uncomfortable at all just annoying that they don’t stay in place. I bought these specific underwear to see if it would help alleviate HS symptoms at all. They have definitely helped with wicking moisture away from the skin. More time will tell if it’s truly helpful for HS. For now, I will recommend these. They are thin, breathable, butter soft, wick moisture comfortable and I would buy again…maybe in a different style next time. I have washed them several times and they seem to be holding up rather well so that is also of supreme importance given the cost of the item. Again, I would recommend this item and plan on purchasing more in a different style very soon.
