The leaves are heart‑shaped and measure 10 to 25 cm long. They are dark green above and paler beneath, turning yellow in fall. In early summer, it bears fragrant, pale yellow flowers in drooping clusters that are especially attractive to bees. The fruit is a small, hard nutlet attached to a characteristic leaf‑like bract that aids wind dispersal.
