Lavender Twist Eastern Redbud (Cercis canadensis 'Covey')

Lavender Twist Eastern Redbud brings a graceful, weeping silhouette to the classic redbud spring bloom, giving you a small tree that feels both elegant and memorable. In early spring, bright pink flowers line the twisting, cascading branches before the leaves appear, creating a strong seasonal moment in a compact footprint. As the season progresses, heart-shaped green foliage fills in along the draping framework, adding softness and texture while keeping the form crisp and sculptural. It is an easy way to add movement, structure, and spring color where an upright tree would feel too ordinary.

Distinctive Features

This weeping Eastern redbud is known for its contorted, arching branches that form a flowing, umbrella-like canopy with natural character in every season. The spring flowers accent the twisting stems and emphasize the cascading shape, then the foliage creates a refined green curtain through summer. Mature size varies with training, but it is typically grown as a small tree around 6 to 10 feet tall with a spread that can be similar or wider, making it ideal for tight spaces and high-visibility planting areas.

Growing Conditions

  • Sun: Full sun to part shade for best flowering and strong growth.
  • Soil: Well-drained soil is essential, and it adapts to many soil types when drainage is good.
  • Water: Water regularly during establishment, then provide moderate moisture during extended dry spells.
  • USDA Zones: Zones 5 to 9.
  • Deer: Not reliably deer resistant, so protect young plants where browsing pressure is high.

Ideal Uses

  • Focal Point: Use as a focal point where the weeping, twisting form can be appreciated from multiple angles, such as a front bed or courtyard.
  • Specimen Tree: Adds sculptural structure and spring bloom in a compact, garden-friendly size.
  • Garden Entry Feature: Creates a memorable seasonal moment near gates, paths, and entry walks.
  • Small Space Drama: Delivers strong design impact without requiring the height of a larger ornamental tree.
  • Underplanting Showcase: The light canopy pairs well with groundcovers and shade-friendly perennials beneath.

Low Maintenance Care

  • Planting: Plant in a well-drained site and allow room for branches to drape naturally without constant trimming.
  • Staking and Training: Train a central leader when young if you want extra height, then let the canopy cascade from the top.
  • Pruning: Prune lightly after flowering to remove dead wood and manage clearance, avoiding heavy cuts that spoil the form.
  • Watering: Deep water during the first growing season and during drought to keep growth steady and reduce stress.
  • Mulching: Maintain a mulch ring to conserve moisture and protect roots, keeping mulch off the trunk.

Why Choose Lavender Twist Eastern Redbud?

  • Weeping Architecture: Cascading branches create a sculptural canopy with movement and year-round character.
  • Spring Flower Impact: Bright pink blooms highlight the twisting form in early spring.
  • Compact Footprint: Fits tight spaces while still reading as a true ornamental tree.
  • Easy to Style: Works in modern, cottage, and woodland-edge designs as a statement plant.
  • Four-Season Interest: Offers spring bloom, summer foliage, and distinctive winter branching.

If you want a redbud that feels like living garden art, Lavender Twist Eastern Redbud is a strong choice. It combines a vivid spring bloom show with a signature weeping form that keeps the landscape looking designed long after the flowers fade.

Anne Helped, I'm Thankful, and She'll Wow You Too!
Format: Hardcover
A small book with a big heart. Lamott writes with honesty, humor, and grace about prayer in a way that is accessible to believers, doubters, and everyone in between. “Help, Thanks, Wow” is simple without being shallow and deeply moving without being heavy. I return to it often.

Why write another review? There are already so many for this book.
Format: Kindle
It shouldn't surprise me that books that I like, by authors that I love, are extremely popular and well reviewed. This is the case with " . We might just as well ask, "Why write another book on prayer? The world is full of them." I could forego the review entirely, but I just can't do that because I love Annie (the author) so much and I cannot pass up the opportunity to say how much I appreciate her life and her work. While this isn't my favorite "Anne Lamott" book, it is certainly worth reading, if for no other reason than the entertainment value. Her words are so skillfully crafted and lyrical that it causes joy to spring up in my soul. This book will provide some insight into prayer for everyone; from the practiced, long-time prayer practitioner to the novice; from believer to agnostic. You will discover aspects of prayer that you had not appreciated before. This is not a technical treatise on prayer, but it did encourage me to pray and to be more faithful in prayer... to be more "in the moment" and to recognize the beauty that is everywhere around us. The day this came out I bought two copies, one for Kindle (which was formatted well and flowed smoothly) and the audio version (which I will listen to the next time through). I have several of Anne's other books in the audio version and I can say it is a real treat when she reads the books herself. Do not hesitate to buy this (or any other) book by Anne Lamott. You will be happily rewarded in the reading.

Understand your loss. Celebrate your gain. Live!
Format: Kindle
A quick look at what makes us human; our principal line of relationship to the Cosmos. Maybe not always reverent, but always livable and believable. This is a book, a primer, on how to deal with the mess of life. Written with enough seriousness and tongue-in-cheek humor to be readable and thought provoking.

An Invitation into the Heart of Reality
Format: Kindle
I love reading Anne Lamott. She helps me feel that it’s okay to be human. She helps me see that prayer is human. It’s the most natural thing you can do. And, really, everybody does it, whether they know it or not. In this delightful book, Ms. Lamott reflects on what she calls three essential prayers: help, thanks, and wow! Such human expressions! She invites us, the readers, into her perspective on life, infused as it is with both the mundane and the mysterious. There are times when it is even threatening. But we are not alone. We have each other, and we have God. (Or, better, God has us.). I don’t know that Ms. Lamott would want to be called an optimist, but she certainly sees the good in the bad (or, maybe after the bad). Life is both, she seems to say, but all is okay. So we ask for help when we’re wise enough (or desperate enough) to do so—both for ourselves and others. And we say thanks because life is full of reasons to be grateful. And there is so much beauty around us—and tragedy too—that we cannot help but erupt with wow! I urge you to read this book. Perhaps, as you read it, you will feel as I did reading it, that you are in a conversation with someone very wise and very compassionate and very real.

Another Thanks and Wow by Anne Lamott!
Format: Hardcover
I was first introduced to Anne Lamott's writing about 25 years ago when I read her book, Bird by Bird. It was a book about how to write and from that moment she became one of my favorite authors. Help, Thanks, Wow is a wonderful book that I have underlined and reread over and over again. Her writing has a voice that many of us can relate to. It's honest and you can feel her pain. She writes with humor to balance the good with the bad. Something that is so important to learn as we go through life. Her descriptions help you see, feel, and smell when she describes "autumn...the colors are broccoli and flame and fox fur. The tang is apples. The rot smells faintly of grapes..." She tells us how to ask for help when you can't do it all by yourself, but how important it is to say thank you, thank you, thank you and Wow for all the things you are grateful for. I loved when she wrote about how service to others is joy ,but how important it is to be kind to yourself. One of my favorite passages was this one, "This morning at six when I awoke, loneliness was sitting on my chest like a dental X-ray apron, even though I was buried in hairy dog love. Help, I am sad and lonely, and already it looks like today is going to be too long. I prayed...I did a kindness to myself, as I would have a troubled friend..." Her descriptions are all like this one and easy to relate to. I loved this book and have given it to friends who have then bought it for other friends. It is definitely a WOW!!!!
