Vintage Jade Distylium is a compact, evergreen shrub prized for its glossy blue-green foliage, burgundy winter flowers, and cascading growth habit. Perfect for low-maintenance landscapes, erosion control, and hedging in USDA Zones 6–9.

Distylium Vintage Jade is native to Asia. It is also known as Winter Hazel, Isu Tree, and Evergreen Witch Hazel. This perennial has a relatively compact size with a cascading growth habit. 

Vintage Jade Distylium displays lush foliage lined along wiry stems. These flexible woody stems branch out in every direction and support an array of pointed oblong leaves that are about 1 to 3 inches long. In texture, these leaves are soft and leathery with an attractive glossy sheen. New growth is bright green and matures to shades of darker bluish-green. The final result is a delightfully bushy yet elegant appearance. 

Handsome, burgundy-red flowers cluster along the far-reaching branches of Vintage Jade. These tiny clustering flowers tend to bloom in late winter through spring. Thereafter, barely noticeable fruits emerge. Fruits mature to a brownish-copper color and have a woody capsule-like shape. They are an excellent food source for wild birds and other animals. 

How to Use Vintage Jade Distylium in the Garden

Vintage Jade Distylium is an excellent choice for mass planting along borders, foundations, walking paths, and even on hillsides for erosion control. Its compact size is ideal for mixed garden beds too. Use it as an accent shrub, low hedge, or show off its vibrant personality in a patio container. 

Vintage Jade Distylium Care Information

Vintage Jade Distylium is resistant to pests, disease, and deer. It is valued not only for its lovely foliage but for its reliable hardiness and no-nonsense appeal. It is also drought and heat tolerant, which makes it ideal for the South. 

Vintage Jade Distylium grows best in USDA hardiness zones 6 through 9. It thrives along the coast and in mountainous areas. In colder climates, this evergreen shrub can be grown in pots and brought inside to overwinter.  

Vintage Jade Distylium prefers full sun but will tolerate partial shade. The more sun it receives, the denser its lush foliage will become.  

Water Vintage Jade Distylium regularly, about 1 or 2 times per week until it is well established.

Vintage Jade Distylium tolerates variable or soggy soil but prefers good drainage. Amend with a slow-release fertilizer in spring. Vintage Jade Distylium prefers an acidic to slightly acidic pH. Mulching with pine needles or peat moss is a great option for increasing acidity.

Vintage Jade Distylium Size

This shrub likes to take its time and is slow growing. It has an average mature height of 2 to 4 feet, depending upon growing conditions and the region. It also has a 3 to 8-foot mounding spread width. Distylium Vintage Jade spacing should be 3 to 4 feet apart for a continuous hedge or 8 or more feet apart for a visual distinction between plants.  

How to Prune Vintage Jade Distylium

Trim the tips of this plant in late May or even into June, after flowering, for a more robust, dense, and compact appearance. However, pruning is not required.

XyliMelts were recommended by my new dental hygienist who said she was told about them at a dental conference by a well known hygienist "guru". I ordered them at around four in the morning because I was up as usual because if my chronic pain syndrome and the dry mouth caused by my pain pills. I got them quickly via Amazon and have not been up again this time of night due to the dry mouth. Now I'm up due to the pain but can fall asleep quickly because of the XyliMelts, they work great! I only use one at a time and it lasts around four hours and I put in another one and go right back to sleep. It's so easy to push the little tab out of the cellophane and just hold it on my gum for ten seconds and voila! No more dry mouth. I used to wake up with my mouth so dry there was no saliva at all in my mouth and parched was an understatement, my mouth felt like sandpaper! Now it's always nice and moist and the taste is extremely pleasant (I didn't get the mint). I had to have two teeth extracted four days before Christmas and my dentist said it was due to the dry mouth and that he sees patterns like this in patients with dry mouth and I'd probably lose more teeth unless I came in for cleanings and check ups three times a year instead of two and we kept a really close eye on my teeth. I'd been using Biotene gel but it wasn't keeping my mouth moist long enough. I'm extremely happy with XyliMelt! I'm also 100% sure I won't be losing any more teeth due to my night time dry mouth because it's a thing of the past! Thanks to amazon prime shipping I got my XyliMelts very quickly, and my nighttime dry mouth is a thing of the past! Xylimelts work...very very well..finally moisture to my mouth for longer than anything i have tried

i have xerostomia...this is a dry mouth due to radiation treatments...I have minimum saliva. I must sip water or a liquid with every bite of food. When i talk my mouth quickly dries and makes it difficult to speak......I have tried many....many different sprays, gels, etc. etc. Along came Xylimelts and it has been the best thing for me to date. It does add some moisture to my mouth and the great part is that it lasts for a very long time. I use the mint free only because my dry mouth is more sensitive to certain tastes. I once used Biotene and now i stay away from all of their products.....Biotene was around a while and marketed their product and had become very popular....Glaxo Smith Kline ( the big drug company that only cares about their profits over our health) purchased Biotene and had altered the product for the worse and they have done this with other products. They actually removed beneficial ingredients and replaced them with poor ingredients....Here is just one example: Xylitol was in one of their products ( Biotene toothpaste) when they purchased the company from Biotene. Xylitol has beneficial qualities and they replaced it with the Cancer in Laboratory rats ingredient called Sacharin... They have removed other ingredients as well...I stay away from any product from Glaxo Smith Kline. I have my own personal boycott and that means I no longer buy their Tums as well... Yes...They played their games with Tums also.....so i just do not buy their products. Xylimelts does work for me...very very well. It adheres to the gums above my teeth and it just stays there adds moisture to my mouth. Obviously i recommend this product

A couple of years ago my dentist and hygienist told me about Xylimelts, which I promptly ordered and appreciated as soon as I used them. After suffering teeth problems due to meds for years, it's too late for me to save my uppers -- dry mouth had decayed my teeth, even with plenty of hydration, good dental hygiene and wonderful dental care (when I didn't put it off a few times, sigh...), and I’m about to get dentures :( . I started out putting two in my mouth at night, but that seemed to be a bit much -- they'd cause me to drool and stain my pillow (washed right out!) Mostly out of concern for the cost of Xylimelts, I began putting only one in my mouth at bedtime. This has worked well for the most part, though some nights I still wake up with a dry mouth, and sometimes put in another one. This could be due to allergies though, my nose is often stuffy as I sleep. However, two would probably prevent this from happening. I tried the non-mint kind first, then accidentally ordered the mint kind once, but I prefer the non-mint flavor. It’s got no real taste, and that suits me fine. By the way, it does take 10 seconds to adhere them, but if you are not comfortable with that spot, you can move them to a better one without them losing their “stick” to the outside of your teeth or gums.
