Philodendron scandens ssp. oxycardium ‘Frilly Philly’ is a stunning and rare vining plant with uniquely ruffled, heart-shaped leaves that set it apart from other Philodendrons. Its fast-growing, trailing nature makes it an excellent choice for bioactive enclosures, where it provides lush coverage, increased humidity retention, and climbing foliage. This low-maintenance, adaptable plant thrives in terrariums, vivariums, and paludariums, adding a touch of wild, tropical beauty to any setup.

Care Instructions

LIGHT. Prefers bright, indirect light but can tolerate lower light levels. However, brighter light encourages stronger growth and more pronounced frilly foliage. In bioactive setups, position it near a light source but avoid direct sun exposure, which can scorch its delicate leaves.

SOIL. Thrives in a well-draining, airy substrate. A mix of coconut coir, orchid bark, and perlite mimics its natural tropical habitat, ensuring good aeration and moisture balance. In bioactive enclosures, this soil type also supports decomposers like isopods and springtails, creating a healthy micro-ecosystem.

WATERING. Keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy. Allow the top 1-2 inches of soil to dry out before watering again. In a bioactive setup, springtails and isopods help regulate moisture levels, preventing overwatering issues and root rot.

HUMIDITY. Thrives in high humidity (above 60%), making it ideal for bioactive environments. If humidity levels drop too low, leaves may become dry and crispy. Misting or using a water dish in the enclosure can help maintain optimal conditions.

TEMPERATURE. Prefers warm temperatures between 65°F and 85°F (18°C to 29°C). Avoid exposure to cold drafts or temperatures below 55°F (13°C), as it may cause growth to slow or leaves to drop.

FERTILIZATION. Feed with a diluted balanced liquid fertilizer every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). In bioactive setups, organic fertilizers like Mealworm Frass provide slow-release nutrients for healthy, robust growth. Reduce feeding in winter, as growth naturally slows.

Cohabitation with Bioactive Organisms

ISOPODS. These beneficial decomposers break down plant debris and uneaten organic matter, enriching the soil with nutrients while preventing compaction, which supports strong root development.

SPRINGTAILS. Essential for mold prevention, springtails thrive in the humid, organic-rich environment that Philodendron ‘Frilly Philly’ loves, ensuring a healthy and balanced substrate.

Soil and Maintenance Tips

SUBSTRATE. A loose, well-draining mix of coconut coir, orchid bark, and perlite ensures healthy root development while preventing waterlogging. Adding a thin layer of activated charcoal at the bottom can help with filtration and odor control in bioactive setups.

HUMIDITY CONTROL. Misting the enclosure, incorporating a water feature, or keeping a moisture-retaining substrate ensures optimal humidity levels. Springtails and isopods help regulate excess moisture and maintain a stable microenvironment.

TRIMMING. Regular pruning encourages bushier growth and prevents the vines from becoming too leggy. Cuttings are easy to propagate in water or directly in soil, making it simple to expand your collection.

PEST CONTROL. Naturally resistant to most pests, but in drier conditions, it may attract spider mites or aphids. The presence of isopods and springtails helps control pest populations naturally, keeping your plant healthy.

With its unique frilly foliage and easy-care nature, Philodendron scandens ssp. oxycardium ‘Frilly Philly’ is a perfect addition to bioactive setups. Its trailing growth enhances terrariums, vivariums, and paludariums, while its natural affinity for high humidity makes it an ideal plant for tropical ecosystems. By providing the right light, moisture, and substrate, you’ll support strong, healthy growth, ensuring this stunning Philodendron flourishes in your enclosure.

Beautiful
Format: Paperback, Format: Paperback
Beautiful book—arrived in great shape! And I absolutely adore Hardy’s poetry. Not sure why I can never find him on the poetry shelves of my bookstores, because he’s one of the greats. So far my favorite is “Her Death and After”. Sounds morose, but it’s actually quite beautiful. It will touch your heart—just what Thomas Hardy had a knack for. If you like classic poetry, please get this book. It’s great!

Hardy the poet
Format: Paperback
We all know Hardy the novelist, but perhaps he is less well known as a poet. In this volume of over 900 pages, with nearly 1,000 poems, Hardy is colorful, chatty, direct, lyrical, thoughtful, deep. And perhaps his finest quality - at least so I find - is the fact that he is down-to-earth. His poems are not "difficult" for a reasonably literate, experienced reader; and the rhyming is never forced. In short, his poems are a delight.

The other side of one of the giants of the Victorian era.
Format: Paperback
Thomas Hardy is my favorite novelist who has ever lived. I preface the review of this poetry anthology - which includes every one of the 900+ poems he wrote throughout his life, from the 1860s to just before his death in 1928 - in this way because I’m a bit biased. Hardy’s poetry is technically satisfying and nearly as moving as his novels, and you can tell that the same precision he brought to prose is on full display in his verse. I’m working my way through every single poem in this collection, and thus far my favorites are “The Convergence of the Twain” and “After the Last Breath.” There are other poets whose works I like better (Dickinson, Yeats, Wordsworth, and Whitman come to mind), but as an amateur Hardy scholar, reading this collection is positively invaluable to understand the full depth of his genius, and as always Wordsworth Classics delivers in terms of a quality paperback that should withstand years of enjoyment. I own many of their releases and have yet to find one that even slightly disappoints.
