The highly desirable nuts are a rich starchy food that are delicious roasted or made into many dishes, including gluten-free breads. They have the nutrition of brown rice. The fallen nuts attract lots of deer in early-mid fall. Chinese chestnuts are resistant to the blight that decimated the native chestnut population in the early 1900s. Increasingly these are considered a great candidate for silvopasture and commercial tree crop production. They produce nuts in as little as 2-4 years from planting. Very satisfying and profitable tree to grow. You need at least 2 for cross pollination. Plant each tree about 20-25' apart. They require very careful transplanting and need mulch and organic fertilizer to thrive. Easy to grow organically. Plant on a warm, sunny site with good water drainage.
