Kalanchoe laetivirens, commonly known as Mother of Thousands or Mother of Millions, is a fascinating and highly popular succulent celebrated for its unique reproductive strategy and ease of growth. This plant is a fantastic conversation starter and a testament to nature's ingenuity. It is an ideal choice for enthusiasts who enjoy a plant with a captivating life cycle and minimal care requirements.

Detailed Description

Kalanchoe laetivirens is a herbaceous perennial succulent that grows to an impressive size, reaching up to 3 feet (1 meter) in height. Its most striking feature is its large, elongated, paddle-shaped leaves that are a glossy blue-green to grayish-green. The leaves can be up to 8 inches long and are arranged in a tiered, upright fashion along the stem.

What makes this plant truly remarkable is its unique method of propagation. The edges of its leaves are lined with tiny notches where new plantlets, or "pups," form. These plantlets are fully formed miniature versions of the parent plant, complete with their own leaves and a small root system. They are ready to fall off and root in the soil below, creating a dense colony of new plants. This prolific reproduction is the reason for its common name, Mother of Thousands.

In late winter or early spring, mature plants can produce a tall, branched flower stalk topped with clusters of beautiful, bell-shaped flowers that are typically reddish-pink to purplish. However, it's important to note that the plant will die after flowering, a process known as monocarpic.

Growing Tips

This plant is very easy to grow, but its prolific nature means it can become invasive in certain outdoor environments.

  • Sunlight: Kalanchoe laetivirens thrives in bright, indirect light to full sun. To maintain its compact shape and vibrant leaf color, provide at least 6 hours of bright light per day. Too little light can cause the stems to become leggy. In very hot, intense sun, the leaves may get a reddish tint, which is a sign of stress.

  • Fertilizing: This plant is not a heavy feeder. During its active growing season (spring and summer), you can apply a diluted, balanced liquid fertilizer once a month. Avoid fertilizing in the fall and winter.

  • Management: Due to its prolific nature, it's best to keep this plant in a container to prevent it from spreading uncontrollably in a garden.

Temperature and Hardiness

Kalanchoe laetivirens prefers warm, dry conditions and is not frost-tolerant.

  • Temperature: It thrives in temperatures between 60°F and 85°F (15°C to 29°C).

  • Hardiness Zones: It is typically hardy in USDA zones 9-11. In colder climates, it is best grown as a houseplant and moved outdoors during the warm summer months.

Water Requirements

As a succulent, Kalanchoe laetivirens stores water in its leaves and is highly drought-tolerant. Overwatering is the biggest threat.

  • Watering Frequency: Use the "soak and dry" method. Allow the soil to dry out completely before watering again. When you do water, do so deeply and thoroughly, allowing all excess water to drain from the bottom of the pot.

  • Seasonal Changes: Reduce watering significantly in the cooler, dormant months.

Soil Preparation

Well-draining soil is essential to prevent root rot.

  • Ideal Mix: A commercial succulent or cactus potting mix is a perfect choice.

  • DIY Mix: You can create your own by blending regular potting soil with inorganic amendments like perlite, pumice, or coarse sand. A mix with at least 50% inorganic material is recommended for optimal drainage.

  • Potting: Always use a pot with a drainage hole.

Propagation

Propagating Kalanchoe laetivirens is incredibly easy and happens almost automatically.

  • Plantlets (Pups): The plant's primary method of propagation is through the tiny plantlets that form along the edges of its leaves. These are miniature plants, complete with roots. Simply collect the plantlets that fall into the soil or gently remove them and place them on top of well-draining soil. They will root quickly and begin to grow.

  • Stem Cuttings: You can also propagate from stem cuttings, but this is less common since the plantlets are so abundant. Take a healthy stem cutting, allow it to callous over for a day or two, and then plant it in well-draining soil.

I design flaw caused me to return it.
Color: Brown/Blue
Pros: - Perfect case size. - Sapphire crystal. - Solar powered quartz. - Large dial face - Minute and second hands reach to minute track for precise reading. - Great field watch design and proportions. - Effective lume on hands. Cons: - Lume on small triangular hour markers is useless, and fades quickly. - The hour numbers are not luminous. - The dull peach color chosen for the hour markers, numbers and hands in dim lighting is very dull and thus hard to read. - The dark blue color chosen for the dial is a dull hue that doesn’t really look blue, but just reduces the contrast between text and markers. - A black dial and bright white markers and numbers would make the watch much more legible/ readable, and would look much better aesthetically. It is a shame that these choices were made on an otherwise perfect design. - I was really excited that Timex finally seemed to get it when they came out with this series of models, but then they handicapped it with a dial that is only useable in bright light. What a shame. I am returning the watch.

Great Watch!
Color: Black/Silver-Tone
I bought this watch after the resin strap on my old Armitron watch broke. I was disappointed to find that armitron doesn't make my old watch anymore, so I had to find a replacement. I did extensive research and finally settled on this watch. I needed a rugged, waterproof, backlit, time-and-date + day of week watch. I also needed a watch with a durable strap, because the resin strap sport watches only last 2 or 3 years, which is how long I had my old one. I love the mid-size design of this watch. It fits well and looks really cool. I bought a used like-new one because it was cheaper and it arrived in perfect condition, just without the instructions or original packaging. It is easy to set, easy to read, and the backlighting is just the right brightness. Setting it accurately is tricky, but I've developed my own system to only be one second off, if that. The band is slightly itchy, but it should break in. Overall, I love my new watch and I'm happy that I found something that can take a beating and still work!

Quality watch at a reasonable price
Color: Black/Red
Velcro-closure on the tough fabric band is comfortable and very secure. This beautiful sports watch allows for 12 or 24-hour timekeeping, and is easy to set. Wearers can program 2 entirety different times using the "Time1" and "Time 2" settings, very useful for travel.

Good Watch; Bad Strap
Color: Blue/Black
The watch is like many other I've worn, Timex included, and has all the features I want in a standard watch. I like the colors which are very similar to my last Timex which I've had to abandon due to failure of the wrist band after many years of daily use and the dearth of stores which replace straps. The watch itself is reliable and works well, but I do not like the velcro strap. I have very small wrists and searched a lot before deciding on this watch with an adjustable strap unhindered by the placement of buckle and holes. However, the strap is still too big to fit me well and it is tedious to align both sides of the velcro. Also, the velcro will catch my sleeves or other parts of my clothing every now and then and is avoidable only through meticulous placment of the two sides of velcro. I myself can't replace a strap with a better one because I don't know how, but if you can and have large enough wrists, then this may be the watch for you. If the manufacture or anyone else knows where one can purchase a small wrist band where the sellers will remove the one that I now have with a new, better fitting one, I wish there were a way that you could tell me. I do wish the watch were flatter because my sleeves are hard to move back and forth over it and it's also in the way of typing on my computer as well as tucking sheets in between mattress and headboard. (I can't rate the light because I haven't yet looked for the switch, and its water resistance I can't comment upon because I have not and will not subject the watch to water.)

Good Sport Watch
Color: Blue/Black
This is a good sport watch. I wear these to work in all sorts of conditions...and they take a beating. I have to get the unisex watches/bands as I have thick wrists for a woman and women's watchbands generally don't fit me. I can't wear the metal watch bands because when I flex my wrist they break. I can't wear the leather bands because when I sweat the band just deteriorates and falls apart. These woven bands are just perfect. I also like that it is velcro. That way you can adjust it perfectly to your wrist. I have worn these watches for nearly 15 years. It has two time functions - so that you can have regular time and maybe the time in another country. It has a split lap stop watch so that you can time each lap as well as your full run. Time, date, alarm, and hour beep if you so desire. It also has a back light which is really handy to tell time in the dark. Only problem with that is at about the year mark, the battery is so low that the light will come on, but the numbers disappear. But, well, it is what it is. Some reviewers have complained that the band is rather small fitting around the wrist. I am a woman and I bought a womans Timex once. The band was EXTREMELY small and barely fit me at all. It would come off a lot of the time because there was barely any velcro to wrap around. This watch is probably more of a unisex watch. Not a woman's per se, but not a big man's watch either. It is about in the middle. I have a 7.5" wrist and that is about as large of a wrist that this watch will fit. The women's watch that I had previously had would only fit a 7" wrist.
