Prunella vulgaris var. lanceolata

If you love bumblebees, you’ll love self-heal. This charming meadow species is both hardy and adaptable. It grows quickly, persists for many years, and is compact so it can be easily squeezed into small spaces where low growing plants are desired. It is highly attractive to many native bees, especially bumblebees. True to its name, it is widely recognized as a powerful and versatile plant medicine.

  • Plant type/canopy layer: deciduous, perennial, herbaceous plant
  • Size at maturity: 12-18" tall, 6-12" wide
  • Light requirements: full sun, part sun/part shade
  • Moisture requirements: dry to moist soil
  • Bloom time: May - September (May - July in the Portland Metro area)
  • Growth rate/ease: fast growing, easy to grow
  • Wildlife support: flowers attract and provide nectar to adult butterflies, bees (especially bumblebees) and other insect pollinators; overall plant attracts and supports beneficial and other pest eating insects
  • Native habitat/range: commonly grows in disturbed soils such as pasturelands and roadsides, as well as moist edges of forests. Prunella vulgaris is circumboreal, meaning different subspecies and varieties are common throughout boreal regions of North America and Eurasia. Portland Plant List - yes.
  • Special features & uses: groundcover; deer-resistant; drought-tolerant; highly medicinal; landscape uses include meadowscapes, pollinator gardens, green roofs and eco-lawns

Gardening with Self Heal: Self-heal is a resilient groundcover that will flourish in a variety of light and moisture conditions. It’s often found in eco-lawn seed mixes, due to its low growing stature. It can spread quickly and tolerates being stepped on as well as mowed, though we recommend mowing infrequently while it’s flowering as to not eliminate its pollinator value.

Seed Sowing instructions: Sowing in fall or early spring is ideal, to take advantage of winter rains. Stratification is not needed, so late spring or summer sowing is possible, if supplemental water is provided throughout the first summer. Broadcast seeds on prepared, weed-free soil approx 60 seeds/sq ft or a small “pinch” per small pot. Either leave on the surface or gently rake in very shallowly. Often requires one year of growth before it blooms. Each packet contains approximately 300 seeds

Durable and Resilient
Color: yellow/orange
I fill the dispenser with their normal Kibble food. It's my slow feeder and herding toy. Every morning the Mini Aussies look forward to taking turns pushing this dispenser around as the Kibble falls out. They never miss a Kibble! Often times they push it so hard it hits the kitchen cabinets and literally flys airborne dropping Kibble! This is extremely durable and resilient. Rarely needs to be washed. Easily hand wash when needed. Highly recommend. This is my 2d one purchased. The first one still works but after about one year of use I noticed the plastic thread to screw on top has been damaged. It still works but want to be prepared if it cannot be used safely anymore. Enjoy! The Aussies sure do!

Toy for Pup
Color: yellow/orange
The only toy that my dog will play with. It helps keep him busy while I'm cleaning. It is suitable for small dogs and safe for them. He twists and turns it around but the toy is still in good condition so the quality is great.

Great Enrichment Toy for Treats or Kibble!
Color: red
I love this toy—and so do my dogs! It’s perfect for daily enrichment and works great as a kibble feeder too. It holds a generous amount (about 3 cups), rolls smoothly, and keeps my dogs mentally engaged while they work for their food. One of my favorite features is the adjustable treat holes. You can easily change the difficulty level, which makes it suitable for dogs of all sizes and skill levels. Whether you have a beginner or a more experienced puzzle solver, this toy adapts perfectly. It’s well-made, easy to clean, and durable enough for everyday use. This has been a great addition to our routine and helps slow down eating while keeping my dogs entertained and stimulated. Highly recommend for anyone looking to add more enrichment to their dog’s day!

Doesn't break easily
Color: yellow/orange
This toy works really good. I bought it from my daughter's dog when they bring her over but it ended up the cat. Loved it and knows how to play with it. Better than the dog did. LOL

My frenchie likes it.
Color: yellow/orange
Very useful for my dog. It made him eat slower because he tends to inhale his food. He got his playtime and was able to eat his kibble a little bit a time.
