Azolla is a more fascinating alternative to duckweed, creating a thick carpet across the water surface, helping with algae control and jumping fish. Under high-light conditions, this plant can turn an orange-red color—just like our red root floaters, and because it has access to atmospheric CO2, it does a great job of absorbing excess nutrients in the water. In our blackwater aquariums, where light on the substrate can be limited due to the tinted waters, care should be taken to limit the growth of this plant so that your rooted plants can photosynthesize properly—a limiting factor in most blackwater aquariums.
