Oleander probably originated in the Mediterranean region, from southern Spain to Syria and Jordan, but has naturalized in most warm areas worldwide.
Nerium oleander has a cultivation history spanning millennia, particularly among the great ancient civilizations of the Mediterranean. Some researchers believe it is the "rhodon" (rose), also called "Rose of Jericho," mentioned in apocryphal writings from 450-180 BC. The plant was very popular in Roman peristyle gardens and is one of the most frequently depicted plants in frescoes in Pompeii and other places in Italy!
With its elongated grayish-green leaves and sweetly fragrant flowers in beautiful colors, oleander blooms most of the year, usually between April and September. In Mediterranean climates, one can expect blooming from April to October, with the heaviest bloom between May and June.
Care
Oleander thrives best in warm and sunny climates and does not tolerate frost for extended periods. In Sweden, it is grown as a potted plant and is perfect for summer conservatories or terraces in a warm, sunny spot.
As a potted plant, oleander requires frequent, abundant watering and fertilization compared to outdoor planting, but it is still an ideal flowering shrub for patios and other areas with strong sun. Does not like to dry out.
During winter, they should be moved indoors to an unheated greenhouse or cellar where they can go dormant. When dormant, they need little light and only occasional watering. Placing them in a space with central heating and poor airflow can make them susceptible to various pests.
