Snowman — White Butterfly Lavender with Ears

Most people think of lavender as purple. Snowman thinks differently. This is a white-flowered French lavender — the sub-species with the tall petal-like bracts on top of each flower head that give butterfly lavenders their common name. In Snowman's case, those bracts are a clean, bright white, sitting above a compact, pale-budded head on a neat, bushy plant. The effect is unlike anything else in the lavender family: less Mediterranean sun, more arctic English cottage garden in a cool palette. Although planted in a terracotta pot on a sunny terrace, it looks rather good. We would say that, of course.

Snowman flowers earlier than English lavenders, typically from May, and will keep going into September if you deadhead. The plant stays fairly compact at around 45–60cm, and the foliage is a grey-green that holds its colour through winter in most of the UK. The scent is the typical French lavender character: resinous, with a eucalyptus edge rather than the sweet, honeyed smell you get from Munstead or Hidcote. Honest assessment: it is not the lavender you buy for scent alone. You buy it because nothing else looks quite like it.

Will Snowman Survive Your Winter?

We need to be upfront about this. French lavenders are not as hardy as English or Dutch varieties. Snowman will sail through a normal winter in London, Bristol, or anywhere along the south coast. A hard frost — minus eight or below for several nights — can kill it, and prolonged wet cold is worse than dry cold. North of Birmingham, or in any exposed garden, we would strongly suggest growing Snowman in a pot that you can bring into an unheated greenhouse or porch from November to March. A sheltered south-facing wall can make the difference between a plant that thrives and one that turns to brown mush by February. If you want a white lavender that will stand up to anything a British winter throws at it, Edelweiss is a Dutch Lavandin and completely hardy, though it is a very different plant — taller, later flowering, and without those distinctive ears.

One thing in Snowman's favour: it looks best in pots, and pot culture actually suits French lavenders. The roots stay drier and warmer than they would in open ground, and you can move the plant to catch the best sun. A 30cm terracotta pot with gritty, free-draining compost is close to ideal.

Planting Companions

A line of Snowman (Snowmen?) in matching containers either side of a doorway is a simple, effective look. In the ground, plant it at the front of a sunny border alongside Papillon — the classic purple butterfly lavender — and you get a purple-and-white combination that flowers at the same time, with the same ear-shaped bracts giving the planting a visual coherence. Santolina and Artemisia 'Powis Castle' work well nearby, all silvery foliage and similar drainage requirements. Salvia nemorosa 'Caradonna' adds a vertical purple spike behind the rounded lavender shapes. By the way, in our experience, Snowman looks slightly lost in very large borders — it is better in containers, raised beds, or small front gardens where you can appreciate the detail of those white bracts close up.

Why Buy from Ashridge?

Your Snowman lavender is UK-grown and dispatched when conditions are right for planting — we will not send tender French lavenders into a late frost if we can help it. Plants travel by next-day courier; everyone comes with our guarantee, and our gardeners here in Somerset are always happy to talk you through planting, overwintering, or anything else. Browse our full lavender collection or see just the French butterfly lavenders. We are a Feefo Platinum Service Award winner, which means our customers rate us rather highly — and keep coming back.

Frequently Asked Questions

Our guide to growing lavender covers the full picture. These are the questions we hear most about Snowman.

What is the difference between English and French lavender?

English lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) is fully hardy, has a sweet scent, flowers in June and July, and is the one you use for cooking and drying. French lavender (Lavandula stoechas) is borderline hardy, has a resinous scent, flowers earlier and for longer, and has those distinctive petal-like bracts on top of each flower head. Snowman is a French type. The trade-off for the longer flowering season and the unusual flower shape is that you need to think a bit more carefully about winter protection.

Can I grow Snowman in a pot?

A pot is the best option for most of the UK. Use a container at least 25–30cm across with drainage holes, fill it with a gritty, free-draining compost (half John Innes No. 2, half horticultural grit works well), and stand it somewhere that gets at least six hours of sun. The advantage of a pot is that you can move it under cover in winter, which makes all the difference with French lavender.

Does lavender keep mosquitoes away?

Gardeners have been planting lavender near seating areas for years, and there is some evidence that the volatile oils do deter mosquitoes. French lavenders like Snowman have a stronger, more camphor-rich volatile oil than English varieties, so in theory they might be slightly more effective. In practice, a single pot of lavender is unlikely to create a mosquito-free zone, but it certainly will not hurt — and it looks better than a citronella candle.

Can I grow lavender from cuttings?

French lavenders root from semi-ripe cuttings taken in late summer, typically August or early September. Take 8–10cm non-flowering shoots, strip the lower leaves, dip in hormone rooting powder, and push them into a pot of gritty compost. Cover with a clear bag or put them in a propagator. They usually root within three to four weeks. Snowman is not the easiest lavender to propagate — English varieties tend to root more readily — but it is perfectly doable with a bit of patience and a warm windowsill.

Is lavender safe for cats and dogs?

Lavender is listed as mildly toxic to cats and dogs by the ASPCA — the essential oils can cause nausea if eaten in quantity. In practice, most pets ignore lavender plants entirely, and we have never had a customer report a problem. The resinous taste of French lavender is, if anything, less appealing to animals than the sweeter English types. Use common sense: if your cat likes to chew everything in the garden, keep the plant on a high shelf.

The squeak might die the ball does not.
Color: Orange Squeak Toy, Size: Medium
If you want to cut to the chase YES THIS PRODUCT WORKS, if you want more details then continue reading. So for starters, we have a 75 pound Doberman whom we call "The Destroyer of All Things". Anything she can tear into (toy wise) she will dismantle in a matter of minutes. It's been very frustrating trying to find toys that will last long enough to occupy her playtime without us feeling like we may as just hand her money to shred up and throw in the garbage. I will say that my dog, however, is also a "picky" destroyer and will not simply chew and destroy and play with just any toy. I bought her a solid hard rubber ball once that weighed a ton and because it was so stiff and had zero give and was actually indestructible (to her standers) but, she played with it for a matter of 30 seconds before never touching it again. If it's too solid and indestructible she gets no satisfaction from it and won't play with it, which is also a waste of money since it's been sitting at the bottom of her toy bin ever since. So trying to find a toy that is a balance of fun for her and durable for our pockets was a hard task, until now. My husband somehow stumbled upon this ball and hopeful from all the glowing reviews (but still skeptical so we wouldn't be disappointed if it didn't work) we ordered it immediately. We have NOT been disappointed thus far and she's had it for a month!! Just like some reviews have said, the squeak did not last long, but that wasn't surprising. Our dog's favorite toys used to be the yellow tennis style kong balls and she'd have the squeak killed in a matter of seconds until it only wheezed and then she'd tear up the ball itself. Which is why we needed to find a replacement that she could shred into tiny rubber pieces all over my floor. This ball really truly was not annoying when is squeaked, until the piercing shrieking noise the Kong tennis balls made this one was pretty chill on the noise level and I didn't mind it at all while it worked. If the squeaker hadn't died I wouldn't have been driven up the wall with the noise and bonus my dog still loved it either way. But, the squeak didn't last long, maybe a few minutes at most. However, I continued and continue to monitor this ball for any other signs of defeat and have yet to find ANY. Not a tooth mark, not a nick, nothing, nada, ZILCH. This ball is soft enough that it has some give when she chomps down on it, but it's durable enough to bounce back and not snap or crack or break under pressure. The give my dog gets from chewing on it keeps her attention because I think it gives her some false sense of hope that she might still be able to destroy it. So even after a month, she's not lost interest. Also, even though the squeak has died when she chomps down on the ball it sort of makes a clicking/suctioning noise which also makes her very happy to play with it. She loves it when we toss it down the hallway because of the softer rubber it has a rather unpredictable bounce and so she never quite knows where it's going to go. Highly recommended and I cannot wait to test out other products from this brand and buy her a couple of more balls to have around the house in replacement to her old Kong balls.

Good dog product
Color: Pink Squeak Toy, Size: Medium
We’ve had the squeak balls for many years. The squeaker doesn’t last long with an aggressive chewer. Our dog squeaks the ball so much, she makes the ball split. We remove the squeaker and the ball continues to be used for a few years until it splits enough we throw them out. The ball has good bounce. We leave them outside all year and they have lasted thru snow and hot weather. The ball has been 2 of our dog’s favorite toy.

Extremely durable even for destructo-dogs!
Color: Orange Squeak Toy, Size: Medium
I got this for our chew-monster Bruce, a very large German Shepherd & (we think) Great Dane mix, after he repeatedly demonstrated his ability to utterly destroy the large Kong squeaky tennis balls within a matter of minutes. He LOVES some squeak, so he obsessively squeaks his toys until they're crushed. After some research on longer-lasting toys, I splurged on one of these, fully intending to guilt the dog forever if he destroyed this much more expensive toy. It's been 2 months, and this ball is not only still squeaking, but it isn't chewed or destroyed AT ALL, despite Bruce's best attempts! It's smaller than his other balls, and because it's a slicker texture, it slides out of his mouth more easily. However, it squeaks when it hits the ground, and he can entertain himself with it for long periods of time. Pros: - Super durable - Squeaker is molded in so it can't come out (unlike the other toys we've bought) - Bright orange is WAY easier to see in the grass than stained green/yellow tennis balls - Easy to clean Cons: - I wish it were slightly larger, because his mouth is so big. No issues with swallowing it or anything, but if they had an XL size (like other super-large sized balls) we'd go for it. Orbee, let us know if you decide to upsize! - It doesn't squeak quite as easily as other squeak balls, but Bruce figured out how to make it work. He sometimes will even hold it against the ground to squeak it faster. - It doesn't squeak as loudly as the faux tennis ball kinds, but wait...that's not a bad thing. It's still loud enough for him to enjoy, without the neighborhood rioting. Overall I can't recommend this toy enough. We feel safe letting him play with it since the squeaker can't come out, and it's paid for itself repeatedly - we were going through a 6-pack of squeaky tennis balls per week (or more!), and haven't had to buy any in the last 2 months because this ball is still in pristine condition.

Poor quality — squeaker lasts 2 minutes
Color: Blue Squeak Toy, Size: Medium
These balls used to be great quality and long lasting. Something changed about a year ago and now the quality is considerably less to include the squeaker becoming inoperable within 2 mins of play. Not sure if the raw materials or the manufacturing process changed, however the decline in quality is obvious. I do not recommend this product to anyone who has a dog that is larger than 10-15 lbs.

STROBE: Favorite Ball, durable, decent battery life
Color: Glow in the Dark Strobe Toy, Size: Medium
*Update since Outward Hound redesign: The new version doesn't seem to light up as consistently on every bounce and seems to light up in a more seizure inducing way (I'm sorry I couldn't think of a better description). The light also seems to die much faster with the new version. The inner light and batter actually popped out its encasement in one ball after about 2 months of use, only by my Golden who doesn't chew particularly forcefully on it. I did notice right away and check regularly for damage, just putting that out there as a warning. It is still by far my dog's favorite ball. Original: This is my Golden Retriever's absolute favorite ball! Particularly the strobe light up ball but she's happy with any Planet Dog ball to the point that she looks at me for the "good ball" to fetch with if i try to have her play with a ball from a different company. Pros: by far my dog's favorite ball - good bounce, and good squish factor yet durable -larger size: safe for large dogs -lights up to see at night -decent battery life -rain does not affect battery Cons: -battery is not replaceable/ rechargeable (though I'm not sure it's an option without seriously altering the design) -regular glow (once battery is dead) is not great -only lights up on a bounce and shortly after that - If your dog bites down particularly forcefully it can displace the battery which typically kills it; if submerged in water (my dog tends to place it in her water bowl when she takes a break while fetching), it is reduces battery life, both make me worry about safety The ball always out lasts the lifespan of the battery for the light, I'd say we average about 1 month per ball while the light works with about 1 hour of use almost everyday. The ball does hold up to some of my dog's friends that are super chewers including one that is a Cane Corso. I don't let them sit and work at chewing it but they definitely squeeze it in their mouths with a good bit of force. My girl is happy to play with the ball even once the battery dies but I prefer to have the light so I can find the ball when needed. The glow color does glow when placed under a flashlight for a few minutes first but I find it doesn't glow as well or as long as other company's glow toys. My dog has a tendency to drown it in her water bowl to keep it nearby or rinse off any dirt and that definitely shortens the battery life but using it in the rain doesn't seem to affect the battery life I think this being my dog's favorite has to do with the good bounce and squeeze factor this ball has. I like that it's slightly bigger than a tennis ball so I'm comfortable with large dogs playing with it. It fits in the "large" chuck it ball launcher. I actually discovered this specific ball when another dog had it and my dog kept taking it instead of her other light up ball that she had played with happily for months.
