Garlic Chives (Allium tuberosum)

Garlic chives are a perennial plant so they come back year after year. Used widely in Asian cuisine and also known as "Nira", garlic chive greens have a wonderful flavor of garlic with hints of onion and honey.

The delicate white blooms in the second year are a favorite source of nectar for pollinators and we like to use the greens in stir-fries and in the filling for gyoza dumplings.

Origin: We collected the parent seed many years ago on a trip to Hong Kong at a community garden near the French International School of Hong Kong. The seeds were originally brought to Hong Kong from Japan by a Japanese student who attended school there.

(Approximately 50 seeds per packet)

Germination rate: 90% - tested 8/30/24

Planting Instructions: Sow seeds in a permanent location by scattering in a sunny location in early spring and lightly cover with soil.

Recipe Ideas:

Garlic chives have a wonderful flavor that is similar to chives but with a stronger flavor and a garlic taste. We use nira in many ways like adding the chopped greens to stir-fries or using the greens as a pizza topping. One of our favorite ways to use nira is in gyoza dumplings.

Goya are Japanese dumplings that can have a variety of fillings and they are usually fried on the bottom and then steamed to finish. They are also commonly called "pot-stickers". You can find a recipe to make the dumpling dough though it is quite time-consuming and you can usually find the frozen circular "skins" in the freezer section at a big grocer or Asian food store.

Our family loves pork gyoza so we start with ground pork and we add lots of chopped nira and chopped ginger to the meat. Then we fill the dumpling skins with the meat mixture and are sure to seal them well. To cook gyoza, we put the dumplings in a pan and brown the bottom before adding water to the pan and covering them quickly to steam. The result are delicious dumplings that are crisp on the bottom and have a fantastic garlic chive taste. We make a dipping sauce for our gyoza that is a mixture of soy sauce, rice vinegar and La-Yu Chili oil. Enjoy!

Fabulously bizarre and effective
These silicone socks have to be the strangest item I have ever ordered from Amazon. However strange they are, I was pleasantly surprised with them. My order came with two pairs, and I took one pair out to wash before use. I laughed at handling them then because they were a cross between hospital socks and leftover mannequin skin…trippy. The socks dried fast, so I put on foot lotion and put the socks on. The socks are beige skin tones that cover the entire foot up to the ankle, basically booties. The silicone is very soft and makes putting on and taking off the socks easy. They are also surprisingly easy to walk around in because the bottoms have grips, again, like hospital socks. I walked on tile, hardwood, and carpet with no slipping. The booties also stayed in place with no issues. I was concerned my feet would sweat, but that didn't happen. I was able to wear them for 3 hours without sweaty feet. When I took them off, my feet were a lot more soft than before or if I had used regular socks. For reference, my feet are not terrible, but the skin around my toes is dry and peeling from my picking(gross, I know). The socks I got are a size large, which worried me because they are big, but the site said for my shoe size (9) that's what I should order, and they were right. They are the perfect size and stretchy for room. I can't believe how cool and well-thought-out these socks are, on top of working. Honestly, these are among the top 20 favorite items I've ordered from Amazon. They may look incredibly strange, and they are, but they work wonders.

The answer to calloused feet.
Color: Pink & Beige, Size: Medium/Large(fits size 8 to 11)
If you have dry callused soles, these are your answer. All my calluses left and my feet were very soft. They should not be walked in unless you are very, very careful as you will slip and fall. I stopped using them for a while and all my problem calluses are back, even when I use lotion at night. They tell you not to sleep in them, I don't know why. I do put these on at night and end up taking them off later as they're not comfortable to sleep in.

Slippery when wet!!!
Color: Pink & Beige, Size: Medium/Large(fits size 8 to 11)
“These moisturizing slippers are actually really comfortable and feel great on the feet. They’re soft, cozy, and do help moisturize while you wear them. I also think they’re a good value for the money. The only downside is that once your feet get moisturized, they can get slippery inside the slippers, so I wouldn’t recommend walking around too much in them. Better for relaxing and letting your feet soak up the moisture than for being up and moving around.”
