Along with its cousin, the Socotra Dragon's Blood Tree (Dracaena cinnabari), from an island on the other side of Africa, the Canary Islands Dragon's Blood Tree is one of the major sources of the historically important red-colored resin known as "dragon's blood." Long used as a dye, painting pigment, varnish, incense, toothpaste, and ingredient in compounds both medicinal and magical, the garnet-red sap — which drips like slow-moving blood from any wounds to the plant's bark — has captured imaginations for thousands of years. Since the major sources of the resin were largely found on isolated islands, it was apparently easy for its marketers to pass it off as genuine dragon's blood — for few had firsthand evidence to dispute such tales. It is first mentioned (with the now-anonymous author acknowledging it comes from a plant) as a product of Socotra in a 1st century Greco-Roman periplus, a sort of first-hand travel and trading guidebook, called Periplus Maris Erythraeixi, which detailed economic opportunities for travelers and traders from the Red Sea across the Arabian Sea to modern-day India, almost all the way to Bangladesh (and including an overland route to China as well).

This species, Dracaena draco,  which not only is native to the Canary Islands, but also Cape Verde (Cabo Verde), Madeira, and a few places in western Morocco, is usually called the Canary Islands dragon tree or dragon's blood tree, or just drago. Early Portuguese introductions from Cabo Verde are believed to have given rise to the small population that still exists in the Azores as well. When the Swedish father of taxonomy, Carl Linnaeus, described the tree in 1762, he called it Asparagus draco — and indeed it is still placed in the Asparagaceae family. But this tree is no simple asparagus. It has a very distinctive growth form: young trees grow upward as a single stem topped by a dense crown of long, yucca-like leaves; then after ten years or so, the first pretty white flowers form (looking somewhat like lilies), followed by orange-red fruits; then a crown of buds forms and the plant begins to branch; each branch grows for another decade or so, then also flowers and branches again, in a process repeated over hundreds or thousands of years until the tree has a large, strong, woody trunk, topped with a maze-like crown of interlocking branches topped with a hemispherical crown of green leaves, flowers, and fruit. The oldest, largest individuals are stunning to see.

When the German naturalist and explorer Alexander von Humboldt visited the Canary Islands in 1799 he was shown a massive drago specimen in Tenerife that had been hollowed out by the indigenous Guanche people and used as a sanctuary long before the arrival of Spanish imperialist colonizers. The tree was 70 feet tall (21 meters) and 45 feet in circumference (14 meters) — and estimated to be 6,000 years old. Sadly, it was felled in a storm in 1868.

The resin from this species differs slightly from the resin of the Socotra dragon tree (which was known to Europeans for a millenium and a half longer), but upon its "discovery" in the 1400s, it began being used as a slightly more accessible substitute. It became particularly important as a varnish for the beautiful violins produced in Italy during the time of Stradivarius and his successors. There is little record of how the indigenous Guanche people (related to mainland Northern African Berber peoples), who arrived in the islands by the 6th century BCE, utilized the plant — because most of them were killed or died of exposure to novel diseases in the decades after Spanish conquest began (the language went extinct sometime in the 1600s) — but its likely they found many uses for it as well, as the local inhabitants of Socotra use theirs.

Today, dragon's blood is still used medicinally — primarily for wound healing, digestive issues, and pain relief — with scientists continually probing it for more uses. Modern research has found potent antioxidant, antibacterial, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, and wound-healing properties, validating its traditional uses, and studies note few negative side effects. Bioactive compounds in the plant show promise in the treatment of diabetic wounds, cardiovascular disease, and even cancer.

In most of the US, the tree can only be grown as a houseplant (and many people have very long-lived dragon's blood trees growing in pots, rarely growing taller than 4 or 5 feet over 50 years), but it can tolerate life outdoors in much of USDA Zones 9 to 12. It can tolerate brief dips below freezing, but prefers temperatures to stay above 50°F.

This California-grown seed comes to us from the good folks at Sheffield's Seed in Locke, New York.

GROWING TIPS: To germinate, soak seeds in hot tap water and let sit for 24-48 hours. Sow 1/4 inch deep, keeping soil warm (above 75°F) and moist, but not over-saturated. Seeds should sprout within 4-6 weeks. For potted plants, use regular potting soil in inividual pots. Put them in bright, indirect light. Do not leave roots wet. Trees grow in places that often see very little rain, so using a humidifier to keep your air more humid is sometimes best. You could also use the ice-cube method, placing a few ice cubes on top of the soil (away from the base of the plant) every week or two, to make sure you don't over-water them.

NOTE: The image of the old tree with the door in its trunk, comes from the Wellcome Collection, a website operated by Wellcome Trust, a global charitable foundation based in the United Kingdom. It is shared under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International license. The image of dragon's blood resin may or may not come from this species, but all of the resins look similar (it may be Dracaena cinnabari, as the author believed, or Calamus draco, an unrelated species which produces a similar-looking resin, or Dracaena draco). It is from author Maša Sinreih in Valentina Vivod and is shared under the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 3.0 Unported license. All others are public domain images of Dracaena draco.

Solid, albeit abbreviated, coverage of Godot Game Engine 3.0
Format: Paperback
Solid introduction to Godot. Lightly touches on most topics, enough to get you up to speed an moving with it, though I personally would prefer a book that included much more depth on each area covered. Granted that wouldn't be a Sams "in 24 hours" book, but rather more of a "definitive guide" or "bible" which this is not. There's definitely enough meat to sink your teeth into, and being the first (and presently only) available book, it's worth the price. Aside from content, docking one star for difficult to read glossy pages and light weight fonts in code samples... It's difficult to find a good angle to read the book without glare across the page from a light and my middle-aged eyes struggle a bit with the code samples. UPDATE -- I've decided I have to dock another star. While the book is written in English, its authors are not native english speakers. It seems a better job could have been done with editing and review. There are a lot of clunky sentences, and several instances where the instruction is unclear. A small example: "A trick to add a simple outline is to add a new material to the Next Pass property. In this new material, set it to Unshaded, add a Grow of 0.01, change the Cull mode to front, and set its color to black." For someone familiar with all the various groupings of properties in a spatial material node, that might be all the information needed, but this book is (I thought) aimed at people with less experience with the framework. Those handful of properties are scattered throughout several groups of properties, and in the case of grow, there's only a field to enter a value when you've clicked a checkbox first. This may be a minor thing, and one could probably make the argument that materials were covered a couple chapters prior -- though that section doesn't really mention all of these properties... Lots of little assumptions and oversights like that make the learning process a little more frustrating that it could be. The information that's there is still great, but if you have little or no experience with Godot, expect to have to do some extra legwork to fill in some gaps on your own.

Godot, a Beautiful Engine that is Great for any Budding Developer
Format: Kindle
My background: I am a professional VBA programmer that has used Unity3D as a hobby engine off and on for years. Until Godot, I had zero experience with Python. GDScript (Python-based) is easy enough to pick up once you understand its syntax IF you know other languages. The Review: The Kindle version is great. I have been following along quite easily. So far, I've kept up with what the book has told me to do and have learned quite a lot about about game development in general. Here's the reason for the three star review: I cannot find where to download the assets they talk about in Hour 5. If it came on a disc for the physical copies, that's wonderful! Great for them. That does nothing for the Kindle version. I couldn't find anywhere in the book that said "got to this website to download the files for the projects you'll be doing in this book. So, I came here, where I bought the book from, looking for a FAQ or something that may lead me to where I can download the assets manually. I googled what I thought would find the files with nothing that I could do about it. So, now I am stuck if I want to continue the book and use the assets they're using because there's nowhere clearly spelled out where to get the assets they've cited, page 73, "First, locate the “sprites” folder, which contains all the needed Sprites for this hour, in the accompanying “Godot-Hour 5” folder and copy it into your Godot project folder using your OS’s file explorer". Good luck in your game development journeys! Update 1: Got in touch with the publisher, they told me to get in touch with Amazon after trying to get the assets through their website, which proved to be unsuccessful. Update 2: Spoke with Amazon, they said that they are merely the store, that they can only provide what is given to them to provide. Please contact the publisher. Update 3: Contacted the publisher again about the issue citing what Amazon said. The publisher said they couldn't do anything about it that it is on "Kindle" to rectify. Update 4: Ultimately, I returned the book. I was enjoying the book very much until this issue happened. I am going to rate this book a 1-star because of the fiasco that has to do with the assets that they mentioned in the "Hour 5" chapter that I never got access to. I hope that this helps anyone make a decision as to whether or not to purchase for themselves. Update 5: I downgraded my review from 3-star to 1 star. Update 6: I continued to press this situation with the publisher of the book. Come to find out, Pearson (cited as the publisher) is not the publisher, per-say but InformIT is. I was incorrect about something that I said earlier about there not being anything in the book for the assets download. I found it after digging some more. There is a page that states that you should go to informit.com/register and use a specific ISBN (the book lists it) to register the book for additional content, updates and what-not. I have done so. So, I dug around on the InformIT website looking for the content, hoping that in this whole debacle, I am just dumb. After a lengthy conversation with an associate from InformIT, the files are, infact, not available. The associate has forwarded my problem higher-up and I should expect an answer in 24-48 hours. I will update this review again once I get an answer. Again, I do not blame Amazon. I blame the publisher(s), Pearson and InformIT for this. Also, let it be known that I have purchased the physical copy of the book despite the problems I am having in hopes that I will still get good information from the book overall. Update 7: It's been a while. I thought that my last update was posted. Though, it seems that it was not. Here's the update: After a few back-and-forth with the publisher that ultimately was responsible for the book, they gave me a link to the assets. Since I cannot paste the link, I will say that you can google the assets yourself. If you're interested in them, please google "github godot 24 hours". My first query response was the exact link needed. I sincerely hope that everything that I've stated here helps. I am going to start following along in the book again since I have the assets needed now. I am upgrading my review back to a three-star until I can fully assess the book. I think that it is asinine that I had to jump through the hoops that I did jump through to get the assets that were needed in order to follow along exactly. I don’t have time to be an asset artist on top of a programmer. I also don’t have too much money to buy assets. Thus, having the assets that were necessary to complete the projects as written would have been nice.

For Total Beginners in Godot, But I Still Learned a Few Tricks
Format: Kindle
Godot from Zero to Proficiency is a short book that aims to get total beginners up to speed with the Godot engine. The author does not cover programming (this is saved for the second book in the series) but rather just shows how to do basic things using the editor buttons. Even though I have been using Godot for over a year, I still learned a few interesting tricks, so that made the read worth it for me. However, the book is clearly designed for total beginners. Most of the topics are so basic you could probably figure them out just clicking buttons in the interface, but if you are new to Godot this might be a helpful light introduction. As mentioned before, the book is not super in depth. It covers how to install the engine, navigating the interface, placing objects and modifying them, adding lights, exporting your game, and importing library assets. Very basic stuff. The artwork used in the book is not great, it definitely has a “programmer art” look to it, but it suffices to show you how things work. Honestly the book only scratches the surface, but if you’ve never used Godot before and are a beginner to game development it might be okay. If you have any experience, I would say look elsewhere, though I did learn a few tricks that made it worthwhile (and the price of the Kindle version was very reasonable). So overall I would say this is one of the weaker Godot books out there, since it only covers a small portion of the engine. It does have good instructions on the basics of the editor, that was nice, but it doesn’t even show any programming. If you are a beginner and read this book, I think you’ll be more comfortable, but still not at a place to start making your game. There is a second part of this series (I will read that next) so that may help fill in the gaps. But considering the reasonable price (on the Kindle) and also that the book only took about 30 minutes to read, I can’t complain.

Pretty solid introduction to GoDot as a complete beginner.
Format: Paperback
I'm not new to programming but I am new to GoDot. I started this book as a complete beginner to GoDot with no other knowledge. This book gives a pretty solid foundation to start with. I'm sure most of this is probably online at this point but it was nice to have something I could easily view offline and come back to. I took a star off as some parts of the edition I have has minor typos. Nothing that completely derailed my studies but something I had to recheck.
