As a dense groundcover, Trachelospermum asiaticum grows 18 inches tall or less and spreads 6-10 feet wide. What’s the difference between Asian Jasmine and Star Jasmine?
- Asian Jasmine is lower-growing, more shade-tolerant, spreads outward, and is better suited as a dense groundcover.
- Star Jasmine is an upright climber and is better suited as a bush, staked vine, or espalier trellis.
- Asian Jasmine has smaller, darker leaves with noticeable leaf veins compared to Star Jasmine.
- Asian Jasmine’s flowers are white with a tint of yellow, darker yellow centers, and smaller than Star Jasmine.
- Asian Jasmine does not bloom as much as Star Jasmine.
Other facts:
- Trachelospermum is a member of the Apocynaceae family (Dogbanes & Milkweeds) and will exude a sticky white sap if cut.
- Asian jasmine and Star jasmine, while not true jasmines like Jasminum polyanthum (Oleaceae family), their fragrance is similar.
