Why do I need to Inoculate seed?
The air we breathe contains more than 78 percent nitrogen in the form of nitrogen gas (N2). Legumes have the unique ability to form a symbiotic relationship with rhizobia (Rhizobium and Bradyrhizobium) bacteria to convert atmospheric nitrogen gas to ammonia nitrogen, a form usable by the plant. This relationship occurs in specialized root tissue called nodules. Some legumes, such as alfalfa, can produce enough ammonia to supply all their nitrogen needs, hence nitrogen fertilization usually is not needed.

Information about inoculation seed
More and more people are interested in planting food plots for a variety of wildlife species. Unfortunately, few people understand what is involved to be successful. To begin, the planting must match the site (i.e., correct soil moisture, and temperature conditions). Next, the soil should be amended, as recommended from a soil test, for the plots to achieve their growth and nutritive potential. Assuming attention has been given to these factors, other details critical to success include seedbed preparation, inoculation and planting depth.

Many legumes (e.g., clovers, alfalfa, birdsfoot trefoil, soybeans, peas) are excellent choices for wildlife food plots. Legumes are plants that bear seed in a pod and have a symbiotic relationship with certain species of nitrogen-fixing bacteria (i.e., Rhizobium, Bradyyrizobium spp.). These bacteria attach themselves to the roots of the legumes and form nodules. From these nodules, the bacteria extract nitrogen from the air. Rhizobia obtain energy from the plant, while the plant receives nitrogen produced by the bacteria. Thus, both bacteria and plant benefit form the relationship. this phenomenon is important when planting wildlife food plots for three reasons: 1.) minimal nitrogen fertilization is required, 2.) nitrogen is not a limiting factor to properly inoculated plants and 3.) weed competition is reduced since little nitrogen fertilizer is applied.

Particular legumes require specific Rhizobia will inoculate all legumes. Therefore, it is important to use species-specific inoculant for for the legume being planted. Although Rhizobia, are found naturally in the soil, it is critical to inoculate seed prior to planting to ensure that the proper species of Rhizobia is in contact with the seed. Seed of many improved varieties of legumes may be pre-inoculated. This means that the seed has already been inoculated with the proper bacteria prior to bagging. Pre-inoculated seed is coated to protect the bacteria and usually has an off-white or pinkish color. Because the bacteria are present under the coating surrounding the seed, pre-inoculated seed do not need to be inoculated. Check the seed certification tag to determine if the seed has been pre-inoculated.

If the seed is not pre-inoculated, certain procedures should be followed to ensure proper inoculation.

1.) Buy inoculant suited specifically for each legume planted. Inoculate has a limited life span, so it is important to check the expiration date.

2.) Never expose the package of inoculant to heat or direct sunlight (especially the dashboard of a truck), as this will kill the bacteria. To ensure viability, inoculant should be refrigerated.

3.) Most inoculants come packaged in a medium of peat, which is black. This material must be mixed with just enough water to form a "slurry."

4.) It is critical that the inoculant adheres to the seed. If not, the entire process may be useless. A commercial "sticker" should be used to stick the inoculant to the seed. Some sticking agents contain gum arabic, which is recommended for its ability to sustain high numbers of bacteria on the seed. If a commercial sticker is not available, a solution of four parts water to one part sugar can be used as a substitute. Do not use cola or soda pop as a "sticker" because the pH of most soft drinks is very low and the acid solution may kill the bacteria.

5.) Dissolve "sticker" in the water (if you don't use sugar water) and mix the inoculant as directed on the package to form a thick "slurry." Add slurry to seed and mix well, making sure all seeds are coated with inoculant. The coated seed should be allowed to dry in the shade. DO NOT place in the sun to dry. The seed should be dry enough to sow in about an hour.

Properly inoculated seed may help Rhizobium produce up to 200 pounds of nitrogen per acre, depending on species of legume selected. This is very beneficial in reducing fertilization costs, especially when following a legume crop with a grass, such as corn, grain sorghum, wheat or oats.

Great for Sensitive Skin
Color: Non-Tinted, Size: 1.7 Fl Oz (Pack of 1)
My face has always been sensitive to sunscreens, so I have to be careful with what I use on my face. (Others can cause burning sensations). This sunscreen is great. I had no issues, and unlike other sunscreens, sweat running didn't cause my eyes to burn or water which was great. Keeps my skin protected against the hot Florida sun, so it works!

And the crowd goes mild
Color: Tinted, Size: 1.7 Fl Oz (Pack of 1)
I had heard such great things but I’m really left a little disappointed. I got the light tinted version, and it’s much darker than anticipated. And the smell is not great. It kind of smells like my grandpa’s trailer and not in a nice, nostalgic way. As a sunscreen though, I have no complaints. The protection is great and at the end of the day that’s what I really need out of this.

Instant relief and moisturized skin well!
Size: 3 Ounce (Pack of 1), Style: Cool Down Lotion
We used the Sun Bum Cool Down Aloe Vera Lotion after getting a little too much sun on vacation, and it worked so well. It gave instant cooling relief without any sticky or greasy feeling. The lotion absorbed quickly and actually soothed the burn instead of just sitting on top of the skin like some aloe gels do. The smell is light and tropical—really pleasant and not overpowering. After applying it a couple of times, our skin felt way less hot and tight, and it definitely helped prevent peeling. We’ll absolutely be bringing this with us on every beach trip from now on! Highly recommend if you’re looking for a sunburn solution that actually works and feels good to use.

Sun Bum Cool Down After Sun Lotion
Size: 8 Ounce (Pack of 1), Style: Cool Down Lotion
I would give this more stars if I could! As someone who spends as much time as possible soaking up the sun during the summer, I’ve found a true gem in Sun Bum’s Cool Down After Sun Lotion. This product has become my go-to for post-sun care, and it’s easy to see why—it’s like gold for sun-exposed skin! With its fantastic tropical scent, skin-loving formula, and high ratings on the Yuka app for its all-natural ingredients, this lotion is a standout. Here’s a detailed look at why I highly recommend it for anyone who loves summer adventures. Ingredients and Yuka Rating One of the standout features of Sun Bum’s Cool Down After Sun Lotion is its commitment to clean, natural ingredients, which has earned it excellent reviews on the Yuka app. According to the product description, it’s formulated with soothing aloe vera, vitamin E, and coconut oil, all of which work together to hydrate and nourish sun-exposed skin. These ingredients are free from harmful chemicals like parabens, sulfates, and dyes, making it a safe choice for those prioritizing non-toxic skincare. The Yuka app, known for analyzing product safety, rates this lotion highly for its clean, natural composition, which aligns perfectly with my preference for products that are good for both my skin and the environment. This clean formula gives me peace of mind, knowing I’m not applying anything harsh after a long day in the sun. Scent and Sensory Experience The scent of this lotion is nothing short of phenomenal—it truly smells like summer in a bottle! The tropical, coconut-adjacent fragrance is light and refreshing, evoking the feeling of a beach vacation. Unlike some overpowering or artificial-smelling products, Sun Bum’s scent is gentle yet nostalgic, making the application process a delight. It’s not just about function; this lotion elevates the entire post-sun care routine with its inviting aroma, which lingers subtly on the skin without being overwhelming. Performance and Skin Benefits When it comes to performance, Sun Bum Cool Down After Sun Lotion delivers exceptional results. After hours of playing in the sun—whether swimming, hiking, or lounging on the beach—my skin often feels dry, tight, or slightly irritated. This lotion instantly soothes and cools, providing immediate relief. The lightweight, non-greasy formula absorbs quickly, leaving no sticky residue, which is a huge plus compared to some heavier after-sun products I’ve tried. My skin drinks it up, feeling soft, hydrated, and revitalized after each use. The inclusion of aloe vera helps calm any redness or mild sunburn, while coconut oil and vitamin E lock in moisture, preventing peeling and keeping my skin smooth. I’ve noticed it helps maintain my summer glow without the flakiness that can come from sun exposure. Texture and Application The texture of this lotion is a perfect balance—not too thick like a heavy cream, but not runny like some gels. It has a smooth, serum-like consistency that glides onto the skin effortlessly and absorbs in seconds. I appreciate how a little goes a long way, making the 8-ounce bottle last through many applications. For an extra cooling effect, I sometimes store it in the fridge, which feels incredibly refreshing on warm, sun-kissed skin. The lotion applies evenly, and I’ve used it on both my body and face without any issues, even on my sensitive skin. Durability and Practicality I’ve been using this lotion consistently throughout the summer, and it’s held up beautifully as part of my daily post-sun routine. The bottle is sturdy and travel-friendly, fitting easily into my beach bag or backpack. While Sun Bum notes that shipping to certain areas like Hawaii or Alaska may be restricted due to alcohol content, I’ve had no issues purchasing it locally or online for mainland use. The formula remains effective even after multiple uses in a single day, and I’ve never experienced any separation or change in texture, which speaks to its quality. Comparison to Other After-Sun Products Compared to other after-sun lotions I’ve tried, Sun Bum’s Cool Down stands out for its lightweight feel and natural ingredients. Many gels can feel tacky or sticky, and some creams are too heavy for summer use, but this lotion strikes the perfect balance. Its Yuka-approved clean formula also sets it apart from competitors that may contain questionable chemicals. While some after-sun products focus solely on cooling, Sun Bum’s inclusion of nourishing ingredients like vitamin E and coconut oil makes it a more comprehensive solution for skin recovery. Pros Clean Ingredients: High Yuka rating for all-natural, non-toxic formula with aloe vera, vitamin E, and coconut oil. Fantastic Scent: Tropical, coconut-like fragrance that smells like summer without being overpowering. Lightweight and Non-Greasy: Absorbs quickly, leaving skin soft and hydrated without stickiness. Soothing and Hydrating: Calms redness, prevents peeling, and restores moisture after sun exposure. Versatile: Suitable for face and body, great for sensitive skin, and effective for mild sunburns. Travel-Friendly: Sturdy bottle perfect for beach bags or travel. Cons Price Point: Slightly more expensive than drugstore alternatives, but worth it for the quality and clean ingredients. Conclusion Sun Bum Cool Down After Sun Lotion is a must-have for anyone who loves spending time in the sun. Its clean, natural ingredients, delightful tropical scent, and lightweight, hydrating formula make it a standout in post-sun care. My skin absolutely loves it, and the high Yuka rating gives me confidence that I’m using a product that’s good for me and the environment. Whether you’re recovering from a beach day or just need to soothe sun-exposed skin, this lotion delivers on every front. It’s become an essential part of my summer routine, and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a reliable, skin-loving after-sun product.
