Dracaena (Sansevieria) trifasciata 'Black Coral'

Dracaena trifasciata 'Black Coral' is a dark-leaved snake plant with tall, firm blades that rise from the base in strong vertical fans. The foliage is deep green to almost black, crossed by softer grey-green horizontal banding that gives the leaves a layered look. Its shape stays simple and defined, while the colour gives the plant a deep, shadowed look in the pot.

This cultivar combines height, dark foliage and muted banding in a clear sword-leaf outline. It grows from a rhizome, so new leaves appear from the base and gradually increase the density of the clump. Over time, fresh shoots fill the pot beside the older leaves, creating a fuller plant with a steady vertical shape.

Dark banded leaves with a strong vertical line

  • Leaf colour: Deep green to near-black blades give the plant a saturated, grounded look in the pot.
  • Pattern: Horizontal grey-green banding softens the dark foliage and adds depth across the blade.
  • Growth base: The rhizome produces new shoots beside older leaves, slowly thickening the plant.
  • Indoor size: Mature plants can reach around 0.5–1 m, depending on light, pot size and growing conditions.
  • Flowering: Older, settled plants may occasionally send up fragrant, greenish-white flower spikes.

Seasonally dry origins behind the tough leaves

Dracaena trifasciata is a rhizomatous geophyte from seasonally dry tropical parts of Africa. Its firm leaves store moisture, while the rhizome needs air around it after watering. The visible plant is only part of the structure; below the substrate, the rhizome stores energy and sends up new leaf fans when conditions are warm and stable.

'Black Coral' keeps the broad, sword-shaped leaf form associated with Dracaena trifasciata, with darker colouring across the blade. The muted banding gives the leaves depth and keeps the surface visually rich. In steady filtered light, the blades usually stay firm and clearly patterned. In dimmer positions, adjust watering to the slower drying pace of the pot.

Repotting intervals are usually long. A slightly snug container helps the substrate dry predictably and keeps the rhizome stable. When the pot becomes crowded, new shoots may press against the sides or distort the nursery pot. That is usually the right moment to move it into a slightly larger container.

Water, light and potting mix

  • Light: In bright indirect light, leaves stay firm and the banding remains visible. Lower light is tolerated, with longer drying time between waterings.
  • Watering: Water thoroughly after most or all of the potting mix has dried. Let excess water drain away, then wait for the substrate to dry again before the next soak.
  • Substrate: A mineral-structured mix with pumice, lava rock, coarse sand or fine bark keeps air around the rhizome after watering.
  • Pot choice: Drainage holes are essential. A decorative cover pot is fine when standing water is emptied after each watering.
  • Temperature: Keep it in normal indoor warmth, ideally around 18–27 °C. A warm root zone keeps the pot drying more steadily after watering.
  • Humidity: Average household humidity is enough. The leaves are adapted to dry intervals and normal room air.
  • Feeding: A diluted balanced or cactus fertiliser during active growth is sufficient. Slow rhizome growth needs light feeding.
  • Repotting: Move it on when the rhizome has filled the pot, the container is deforming, or the substrate has lost structure.
  • Propagation: Divide established clumps by separating rooted rhizome sections. Division preserves the full clump shape.

Dark foliage problem signs

  • Soft tissue near the base: Inspect the rhizome area, cover pot and substrate depth. Mushy bases usually come from moisture held too long around the lower plant.
  • Wrinkled or folding leaves: Check whether the pot is very dry, then inspect root health. A plant with damaged roots can look thirsty even when the mix has been watered.
  • Brown leaf tips: Review watering consistency, mineral buildup and old handling damage. Dry tips can be trimmed within the dead tissue.
  • Leaning growth: Turn the pot occasionally so the leaves receive light evenly. A crowded clump can also push older leaves sideways.
  • Slow shoot production: Slow growth is normal, especially in winter. Check light and warmth first, then adjust feeding only during active growth.

Safe placement at home

Keep Dracaena trifasciata 'Black Coral' away from pets and small children who may bite the leaves. Snake plants contain saponins, which can cause nausea, vomiting or diarrhoea in cats and dogs if ingested. The firm leaves also benefit from a stable position where the pot stays secure.

Dracaena, Sansevieria and the banded species name

The accepted botanical name for the species is Dracaena trifasciata, while Sansevieria trifasciata remains the older name still widely used in plant shops and care guides. The genus name Dracaena comes from the Greek drakaina, meaning “female dragon”, a name historically linked to red resin in some dragon tree relatives. The species epithet trifasciata means “three-banded” or “marked with three bands”, from Latin tri- for three and fasciatus for banded.

Dracaena trifasciata 'Black Coral' has tall, dark, banded leaves with a steady upright form.

Incredible 9.2 Surround receiver at an unbeatable price.
I may return at a future date to give a more complete review, but others that are much more knowledgeable about audio equipment than I have already done so. For me, the Onkyo (Onkyo TX-NR7100 9.2-Channel 8K/4K Network A/V Receiver) replaced a much older (2001) TX DS787 5.1 100 W Surround receiver that listed new for around $1050. I probably didn't pay quite that much but certainly something near $900. It was great for its time, perhaps even advanced with THX, Dolby, and other listening modes. But it didn't have: HDMI inputs or outputs, any BlueTooth capability, no hard wired or WiFi connectivity or basically any operating or connection modes that most all modern receivers have. This turned into a big problem with modern LED/LCD/OLED TVs, Alexa and other now common devices. I bought my new Onkyo TX-NR7100 from Amazon for $625. Other retailers (e.g.Best Buy) advertise it for up to $1200, so Amazon's price is outstanding. Set up was far more complicated (for me) than any previous receiver that I ever owned, mostly because there were a very large number of back panel input and output jacks, to and from the TV, as well as speaker outputs for 9.2 surround. Suffice it to say that once everything was connected properly (I made a few mistakes along the way), I was completely thrilled. The On Screen Display, completely accessible either from the front panel or the remote was far superior to anything I had ever seen before. Literally every operating parameter is accessible to the user. And I used most of them. It is also completely WiFi ready so my 150 Gbit home Wifi network lets it connect wirelessly and stream music error free. BlueTooth is also another way to connect almost any device to it for audio and audio/video playback if you connect the digital connections to and from a modern TV. It also speaks and listens to Alexa, although I must confess that I haven't played around with that much yet. This is already much longer than I had intended, so let it suffice to say that the Onkyo TX-NR7100 is an absolutely incredible receiver for an incredible price. I'd give it 8 stars if I could. Sounds great.
Just received my Onkyo TX-NR 7100, watched a few YouTube videos before it arrived, so set up was easy. Ran accuEQ, I am getting new front speakers so I’ll wait to run Dirac. After accuEQ, I still had to make a few adjustments, to the speaker levels and especially the sub. It set my subwoofer way too low. As of right now having no problems with Bluetooth. I’ve only listened to music so far, can’t wait to watch a movie. For now I have a 5.1.2. System, getting new fronts, the Klipsch r51-m’s will go to the rear surround and Klipsch r41-m’s will be my height speakers in a 5.1.4 system. So far loving this avr. Update 2: Just calibrated with Dirac for the 6th time. They tell you if you sit in a recliner, reclined measure with it reclined. Well I measured with the chair in its upright position. It makes a huge difference I hear the surrounds much better. Btw I listen to all channel stereo, I know audiophiles say it sucks, however I listened to 2 channel stereo for 20 years, when there was nothing else. I didn’t buy a 9 channel avr to listen to 2 channel stereo. Like Randy the cheap audio man says “ audiophiles aren’t always right. If it sounds good to you, that’s all that matters.” So try calibrating in the upright position, or if you sit on a stationary chair or couch, try positioning the mic slightly forward of your listening position. It makes a huge difference. Hope this helps, enjoy. Update: Ok bought Klipsch rp-600m speakers for the front with 52c center. 51m surrounds, 41m rear heights. Polk owm3 front heights. Why Polk? Lighter easy to hang and as height speakers they are only there for atmos. Ran Dirac live, the application does what it would take several hours to make it sound like it does, if I even could get it to sound so good. Apple TV 4K with my Hisense U8K. The google tv interface is ok, but Apple TV is faster and easier. The Onkyo 7100 is a gem, runs pretty warm but I have it out in the open. If you are going to put in a cabinet I suggest a fan. Very happy with the whole system.

Straightforward setup Excellent Warm sound
Style: AVR-S770H
Setup was surprisingly easy. No manual included, but a quick link to a PDF. Connection to PC, Nintendo Switch, Cable Box done in minutes. Setup Menu worked great. Bluetooth pairing to phone easy. Setup as 5.1 (waiting on 2 more speakers for 7.1 connection). Small glitch in that the speakers didn't respond or even test tone right away. Went in and out of menu a few times, and then they worked (did this once with a 2-speaker quicker setup and then did the same glitch when adding the additional speakers to the profile with the full 5.1 setup). Works with ARC well (Samsung TV that came with silly external box) and reciever connection defaults to a passthrough when not on, which is nice. Video is great and compressed audio cleanup works well. Didn't do Mic leveling yet, but the manual speaker tuning worked well at leveling things out for 5.1. I was expected a lot harder set-up and was pleasantly surprised. It's a quality product. Some folks may not like the direct DB volume adjustment but I find it handy, especially when working a little later at night, I can dial in a very exacting low volume so as not to disturb the rest of the house. Very happy with purchase.

Great product
Style: AVR-S770H
I have owned several $1000.00 plus theater systems of 7.1(2) channels and I have never heard my speakers put out the sound like the Denon does. I would never change systems again unless Denon stops producing this product

AVR-S770H - My first AVR and my first Denon - works great with Directv and Fire Stick
Style: AVR-S770H
This review is for the Denon AVR-S770H. I was apprehensive about buying an AVR for my main TV. I've always used a soundbar and was happy with the results. I assumed that adding an AVR would make things finicky and complicated. I'm happy to say, that is not true. This Denon has been fabulous. My requirements for a home theater receiver were/are the following: 1) Ease of use and NO additional remotes to our current set-up (family needs, I'm not a bachelor!) 2) I need the ability to connect 2 zones: the TV room and I have a pair of outdoor speakers on the patio First, as to the remote situation, I use Directv and I use an Amazon Fire Stick 4k. My old set-up was super simple. I picked up the Directv remote and hit Power. That turned on the TV, the Directv box, and the soundbar (since it was connected to the TV ARC port). Simple. If I wanted to change over to the Fire Stick, I simply used the same Directv remote to change the input and then used the Fire Stick remote from there. I'm happy to say the Denon has made things even simpler. Not only does the Directv remote turn on/off the TV, Direct box, and the Denon receiver but now I don't even have to bother switching inputs. If I pick up the Fire Stick remote and hit the Home button, the Denon senses that and immediately switches over. Likewise, if I pick up the Directv remote and hit a button, the Denon will switch back over to Directv. So that is an actual improvement. By the way, in order to get the Directv remote to turn off the Denon, don't worry about trying to program the remote via the Directv menu (I tried all the codes and failed). Instead, go to the Denon setting menu. Choose Setup> Video> HDMI Setup. Change the "Power Off Control" to "Video" or "All". Now the Denon will turn on/off when the TV does (using the Directv remote). My second concern was operating a second set of speakers via Zone 2. That also works perfectly. Now when I step outside to sit on the patio, I simply hit the Zone 2 button on the front of the Denon. I can use my phone to play music via the Denon's built-in Bluetooth. Some users need to be aware: in order to operate Zone 2, the receiver needs to be switched from 7.2 channel to 5.1 + Zone 2. That's perfectly acceptable for me since my TV has only front L & R speakers and a subwoofer. So I'm not even using the full capabilities of the 5.1. If you need 7.2 and a second zone, you need to find a different AVR. In sum, I bought this Denon with some trepidation and thought maybe I'd have to return it. Instead, it does everything I want and then some. Of course, it sounds great too. I'm so glad I switched from the soundbar.
