Alocasia 'Maharani'

Alocasia 'Maharani' is a compact Alocasia hybrid from Alocasia reginula and Alocasia melo. It forms thick grey-green leaves with pale veins and a firm surface, giving the plant a dense, sturdy look in a small pot.

The plant stays relatively compact, producing short petioles and heavy-textured blades from a rhizomatous base. Mature foliage can develop deep red undersides, while younger leaves may show greener lower surfaces.

Compact jewel foliage

  • Hybrid of Alocasia reginula × Alocasia melo.
  • Small-growing Alocasia with thick grey-green leaves.
  • Pale veins across a firm textured blade surface.
  • Deep red abaxial colour on mature foliage.
  • Created by Peter Boyce during his time at Malesiana Tropicals.

Textured leaves and pot growth

Alocasia 'Maharani' carries the compact, dark-leaved influence of Alocasia reginula and the heavy leaf texture associated with Alocasia melo. The leaves feel substantial and keep a clear contrast between the grey-green surface and lighter veins.

Its thick leaves can look tough, but the rhizome still needs oxygen around the roots. Warmth, a small draining pot and a mineral-organic substrate keep air available around the base.

Keeping Maharani active

  • Light: Soft bright light keeps the plant compact and the veins clearly visible. Direct midday sun can mark the thick leaf surface.
  • Water: Water once the upper layer of substrate begins to dry. Keep the mix lightly moist in active growth, then reduce watering when growth slows.
  • Substrate: Use a chunky, mineral-organic aroid mix with bark, pumice, perlite or lava. Jewel Alocasia roots need drainage and air around the rhizome.
  • Humidity: Moderately humid air helps new leaves open cleanly. Good airflow helps prevent marks on the dense leaf surface.
  • Temperature: Aim for steady warmth around the pot, with nights kept mild around the roots.
  • Feeding: Apply light fertiliser while the plant is actively growing. Compact hybrids need measured nutrition rather than strong fertiliser doses.
  • Potting: Use a small draining pot and size up carefully. Too much unused substrate can hold excess moisture around the rhizome.
  • Propagation: Propagate from corms, offsets or rhizome divisions once young plants have their own roots.

Seasonal pauses and root checks

  • Yellowing leaves: Check substrate moisture, temperature and root health before changing the feeding schedule.
  • Soft base: Inspect for root or rhizome rot caused by cold, wet conditions.
  • Brown dry edges: Review humidity, watering consistency and direct sun exposure.
  • Dull or stippled leaves: Check the undersides and petiole bases for spider mites.

Grooming with irritant sap in mind

Alocasia 'Maharani' is toxic if chewed. Keep it away from pets and young children, and wash your hands after cutting old leaves or divisions.

Maharani and grey-green texture

Alocasia is part of the family Araceae, with a genus name derived from Greek a-, meaning apart from, and Colocasia. The cultivar name 'Maharani' comes from a Hindi word meaning queen, used as a nod to its reginula parent.

Nice shelf option
These industrial pipe shelf brackets are a great choice if you’re going for that rustic, farmhouse look. The black iron finish looks clean and modern while still giving off that classic industrial vibe. Once installed, they feel sturdy and well-built. Perfect for holding books, décor, or heavier items when paired with solid wood planks. I like the open design because it really lets whatever you’re displaying stand out. They’re also pretty versatile and work well in different spaces like living rooms, kitchens, or home offices. Just keep in mind that this is the bracket system only, so you’ll need to supply your own wood and possibly some mounting hardware depending on your setup. Overall, they’re a stylish and functional DIY option that adds a lot of character to a space.

Excellent industrial shelving hardware for the price
I bought these as a housewarming-style gift for my brother-in-law, who recently finished building an extension onto his home and finally has the space for a proper office. His family’s aesthetic leans heavily toward that cottage-meets-industrial look, and these brackets fit the brief perfectly. First impressions were excellent. The iron construction feels genuinely heavy-duty, and the machining and threading are better than I expected at this price point. The finish is a clean matte black that looks sharp without feeling overly glossy or cheap. Installation is straightforward if you’re comfortable with basic wall mounting. Because these are iron pipe components, you may find yourself making tiny adjustments with micro shims to get everything perfectly level depending on your wall and stud placement. That’s not a flaw so much as the nature of pipe-style systems. Once dialed in, though, they feel very solid. The scale is also worth mentioning. These are not subtle brackets—they’re a bit of a statement piece. That’s great if you want the shelving to become part of the room’s visual identity, but it’s something to be aware of when planning the space. One thing I actually appreciate is that they don’t include the wood shelves. Bundled wood usually drives up the cost and often isn’t the species or finish you’d want anyway. This way you can choose your own boards and tailor the look to the room—which is exactly what my brother-in-law ended up doing. Overall, a very well-executed industrial shelving system: sturdy, attractive, and surprisingly refined for the price.
