Introducing the Dancing Bones cactus, which is known as Hatiora salicornioides (formerly known as Rhipsalis salicornioides)!

The Dancing Bones cactus is named for its thin, segmented, flexible stems that resemble bones and give it a "dancing" appearance when it moves in the breeze. This desert cactus is also known as the Drunkard's Dream cactus, spice cactus, and bottle cactus.

This Hatiora salicornioides is like no other, with its bushy, deep green appearance and cylindrical stems that seem to sway to their own melodious beat.

This shrubby cactus plant can grow up to an impressive height of 3 feet along the tree trunk.

The segmented stems of younger plants have an enchanting shape that resembles either a club or even a whimsical bottle, hence the common name.

The Hatiora salicornioides have flowers with bell-like shapes hanging delicately at the ends of the stems. These small yellow-orange flowers that bloom from late winter to early spring add a touch of vibrant color to this already captivating dancer on our cactus stage.

To propagate Hatiora salicornioides dancing bones, you can use stem cuttings, which involve cutting a healthy stem below a joint or segment. With Hatiora salicornioides care and patience, the cutting should develop roots and start new growth.

Additionally, the dancing bones plant is a friendly cactus for both pets and humans. So, you don't have to worry about any harmful effects if you come into contact with dancing bone cactus. It's always a good idea to handle plants with care and wash your hands after touching them, just to be safe.

Watering Needs

The Hatiora salicornioides is a drought-tolerant cactus that requires moderate watering. It is best to let the soil completely dry out between waterings.

In the spring and summer, during the growing season, when you water your dancing bones desert cacti make sure to give them a good soak but be sure to let the excess water drain away. Overwatering can be harmful to this cactus, so it's important to be careful not to give it too much water.

In the fall and winter, when your dancing bones are dormant, it's important not to overwater them. Keep an eye on the weather and adjust your watering schedule accordingly, making sure not to leave the cactus sitting in soggy soil.

If you're not sure when to water your dancing bones cactus, you can use a moisture meter to check the soil. This will help you determine when it's time to water the dancing bones cactus.

Pay attention to signs of overwatering, such as yellowing or mushy stems, and adjust accordingly. It's always better to err on the side of underwatering and gradually increase watering if needed.

Light Requirements

The Hatiora salicornioides prefer bright indirect sunlight. When growing your dancing bones cactus indoors, it's best to place it near a window that receives bright, filtered light.  If you notice the stems stretching or becoming pale, it may be an indication that it needs more light. Consider supplementing with artificial grow lights to provide the ideal light conditions.

For outdoor cultivation, the Hatiora salicornioides prefers partial sun to filtered sunlight. It can tolerate some morning or evening sun, but direct afternoon sunlight can be too intense. Avoid placing it in direct sunlight for a prolonged period, as it can scorch the delicate stems.

If you live in a region with hot summers, providing some shade during the hottest parts of the day can help protect the cactus from sunburn. If the dancing bones cactus doesn't receive enough light, its stems may grow leggy, and yellow to orange flowers will become paler, so make your cactus happy and give it plenty of light.

Remember, finding the right balance of light is crucial for the health of your dancing bones cactus Hatiora salicornioides. Observe how it responds to the light conditions and make adjustments accordingly.

Optimal Soil & Fertilizer Needs

The Hatiora salicornioides prefers well-draining, slightly acidic potting soil. A good mix for these dancing bones Hatiora is one part peat moss, one part perlite, and one-part coarse sand. This will provide your dancing bone cactus with the right amount of drainage and acidity. Instead, make or buy a well-draining potting mix, or ideally, use our specialized cactus potting soil that contains 5 natural substrates and mycorrhizae to promote the development of a strong root system that helps your dancing bone cactus to thrive.

As for fertilizer, the dancing bones cactus don't require much. It's best to avoid fertilizing it during the winter months to prevent mold growth. If you do decide to fertilize it, use a balanced natural fertilizer with an equal mix of NPK (5-10-5). Fertilize the dancing bone once a year during the growing season, which is typically in the spring.

Remember, it's important not to over-fertilize, as this can cause harm to the cactus. Keep an eye on your Hatiora salicornioides for any signs of nutrient deficiency, such as pale or yellowing stems. If you notice these signs, you can consider using a specialized cactus fertilizer with a higher phosphorus content to promote healthy growth. Always follow the instructions and adjust the frequency of fertilization based on the needs of your Dancing Bones cactus.

Hardiness Zone & More

Native to eastern Brazil, this ornamental plant Hatiora salicornioides is not frost-tolerant. If you live in an area with cold winters, it's best to keep the dancing bones cactus indoors during the winter months.

The dancing bones cactus prefers temperatures between 60 and 80 F. If you live in a region with a mild climate, such as USDA zones 10-11, then you can consider placing it outdoors during the warmer months. It can tolerate higher temperatures, but it's important to avoid exposing your dancing bones to temperatures below 50 F. Just make sure to acclimate it gradually to outdoor conditions to avoid shock.

As for humidity, the dancing bone cactus prefers moderate humidity levels. It can handle some dryness, but it's best to avoid your cactus family exposing it to extremely dry conditions. If you live in an area with low humidity, you can place a tray of water near your cactus to help increase the humidity levels.

Remember, providing a stable temperature range and moderate humidity levels will help your Hatiora salicornioides thrive, whether it's indoors or outdoors.

Final Thoughts

Overall, the Hatiora salicornioides (Dancing Bones cactus) is a fascinating cactus native to Brazil with thin, jointed stems resembling coral or seaweed. It prefers bright, indirect light indoors and thrives in a temperature range of 60°F to 75°F. Proper, well-drained cactus soil and drainage are crucial for your dancing bone cactus. The watering is slightly moist but not overly saturated, with the top inch drying out between waterings. Fertilizing is essential for growth and health, with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer once a year during the growing season. However, be cautious not to over-fertilize, as this can lead to nutrient burn or other issues.

I recently purchased this inflatable mattress from Amazon, and I’m honestly very impressed with the quality and comfort. It inflated quickly and was very easy to set up. The material feels durable and strong, and the mattress stayed fully inflated throughout the entire night without losing a

Skeptical at first, but after first use (so far) it’s a solid product
Style: 22", Color: Grey, Size: Queen
I initially bought this to stay at my MIL’s senior community (to help her get settled), so I didn’t want to spend a lot of money on it and I planned to leave it for other relatives that might want to visit. I expected it to be cheap-ish quality and probably not last through my two week stay. First off, set up was a breeze. I laid it out and started inflation and it took about 4-5 minutes to fully inflate. The motor made noise, but it’s to be expected from something like this—I can say that it wasn’t as noisy as our Costco-bought mattress. Second, it’s big—but that’s not a bad thing as much as I thought anyway after I saw it fully inflated. Turns out, for me, it’s a good thing. Our Costco mattress sits low to the floor and as it deflates a bit during the night, it’s tough to get up. This one (the 22” model and the largest one at this writing) is wonderful as I can sit on the edge of it and stand up easily. Your experience may be different, but for older folks it makes it really easy to get out of bed in the morning. How does it sleep? Well, since I was visiting by myself and my significant other wasn’t with me, I can only speak for a single sleeper. It was really comfortable! It did take a bit of tweaking though as I thought I would like it more firm as I like to side sleep. The first couple of nights were a bit rough as I tossed and turned a bit in my sleep—I found that I couldn’t get comfortable on my side. For the reviews that say that it deflates after sleeping on it, I can say that it did seem to lose some air after the first two nights. The manufacturer does state that it does “stretch” and not deflate. As I wanted to test that statement, I didn’t change the firmness of it by re-inflating it to where I had it. The third and fourth nights were better sleep and I didn’t feel like the mattress deflated at all, so I found the stretch statement to be valid—it wasn’t losing air. After that night, I re-inflated it to where I thought I’d like it. The next night was the same tossing and turning that I had those first two nights, so I concluded that I needed to make it less firm and I actually DEflated it a bit and for the rest of the stay it was perfect! I didn’t have to touch it and I even unplugged it. When I was getting ready to leave, I started the deflation process by turning the dial in the opposite direction. It took longer to deflate, so I walked away for a bit—I’d guess about 7-8 minutes. When I came back the mattress was flat as a pancake and ready to fold. This is the only hassle of the process as folding it to get it into the storage bag and back into the box (for storage). I do like the tote that they provide as the handles make it easy to lug about. So, the first use was a success. If repeated uses reveal issues, I’ll report back. I will say that I plan to buy another one to replace our beloved Costco air mattress—she’s showing her age and the height of this one as well as the cost make it a no-brainer to get it as a second. We’ll use this one until it dies (if it even does) and then fall back on our old one if needed. I gave an overall 5 stars for the product with 4 stars for sleep quality and comfort only because your idea of these two might be a bit of a learning experience until you find your inflation sweet spot—so it’s not just an “inflate fully and use” type of scenario.

Leaking mattress 2nd use, Good Warranty Help, Bag not durable
Style: 22", Color: Grey, Size: Queen
UPDATE: first time I slept alone, all was good. Our second week to use, we were past the warranty. Tried to sleep on it with two people and it's deflating. I don't believe it's the weight because it deflates when no one is using it as well. Contacted company, they are very helpful, and I believe you're speaking to someone in the US. You can remove the pump and there's a gasket that you can try to snug up. That did not help so they are shipping a new mattress to me. Removed star because bag already had hole at seam when delivered, and it's not durable. I'll contact the company and update. The bag isn't looking durable. Mattress does seem very durable. Blows up and deflates as expected. It does have a plastically smell when you first inflate, and again when I deflated. I can't complain, it's plastic lol. If smells bother you, just inflate ahead of time in another space. Deflating smell was stronger of two. Again, just deflate in another ventilated space. The mattress didn't continue to smell with use. Make sure you have deep pocket sheets. There is no indent for the bottom of the elastic to go around. I only had to fix them once in 8 nights. I slept alone, so I can't say how it would be with two. I'll update when we sleep on our with two people. But I found it very firm and comfortable. I've been having some back & neck pain. It didn't cause any problems. Might have to add some air 2nd night as the mattress might stretch a bit first time using. Found it to be true queen size. Cord/plug a little tricky to store back in the compartment within mattress. Does take some time to deflat. It folds easily and compact, but I'll have to figure out the configuration of exactly how to fold it to get it to fit into the bag once I get a replacement. I believe you'll need two people to get it in the bag. It's heavier than the thinner mattresses. So much nicer having the higher height, especially if you're going to sleep on it for more than one night. I think I went with the 22".

Quiet Inflation and Solid Comfort
Style: 22", Color: Grey, Size: Queen
I’ve been really impressed with this air mattress. The firmness is spot on—it doesn’t feel like you’re sinking or fighting to stay level like a lot of other inflatables. It actually holds its shape well enough to feel close to a real bed, which surprised me. One of the biggest things for me was how well it holds air. I left it set up for 3 days straight, and it barely lost any pressure. I only needed to top it off slightly, which is way better than most air mattresses I’ve used that need daily reinflation. The built-in pump is another win. It inflates quickly and, more importantly, it’s relatively quiet compared to others. You’re not blasting the whole house when you set it up late at night. Deflation is just as easy, which makes packing it up for storage or camping super convenient. I’ve used it both for guests and for camping, and it performs great in both situations. It’s comfortable enough that guests don’t feel like they’re getting the “temporary bed,” and durable enough to handle being moved around. Overall, this is one of the better air mattresses I’ve owned—reliable, comfortable, and easy to use. Definitely recommend if you want something that won’t let you down after the first night.

From an IDOO 18" to this Intex 22" queen air mattress
Style: 22", Color: Grey, Size: Queen
I have been sleeping on air mattresses for about 5 years now. Yes, every night. The reason is that I cannot afford a decent new mattress and before switching to an air mattress, I had used mattresses. Most developed "sink holes" and those who sleep on an older mattress know what I mean - a spring or something inside has shifted and that spot...well, it's a dip that you have to figure out how to avoid when sleeping. But the basic reason is because I am an older lady that lives alone and when I have moved, I have moved myself so as not to bother people. I have mostly flat pack furniture so I can break it down and move it myself. Having an air mattress fits right in with that ease of moving my own stuff. The IDOO I had was a great deal, though I had last had a King Coil 22" that I really liked EXCEPT for their "pillow" area (the part at the head is inclined and that bothered me since I am an "arm sleeper" - put one arm up under my pillow, under my head and hang it off the bed). Other than that part King Coil is a great air mattress bed. Now for this Intex - I have had a couple of different Intex items and find they make quality stuff - first was a smaller, rectangular pool that wasn't too hard to set up (but I did need a friend to help with putting it up) and I currently have their inflatable loveseat that unfolds to become a bed. It's a nice extra piece of furniture/bed, but wish it had the internal pump which it doesn't. Still, it is a serviceable spare seating and sleeping piece that can be put up quickly enough. NOW, for this bed - back to my 22" height and I am SO HAPPY with that part of it. When you are older, getting UP off something is harder than scooting down off that same thing! Meaning that I have no problem getting on a bed (no matter what the height), but in the morning, when I'm groggy and not 100%, trying to push myself up off the 18" wasn't horrible, but it wasn't fun at all. With this Intex 22" queen, my feet dangle just a bit off the floor and pushing myself off and DOWN is just so much easier. I was also relieved that the pump is at the top (or could be the bottom, depending on how you orient the bed) as my outlet is at that spot on the wall behind the bed. The IDOO had the pump on the side so the cord had to be put up under the bed...I didn't like that. This Intex, like all the air mattresses with an internal pump, it inflates (and deflates) very quickly. Around 5 minutes. What's easy is taking down an air mattress - most of them come with a carry case as this one did - and if you flip the sides in, then do a fourths fold up, it will fit in the bag and isn't too terribly heavy even for me to carry. The IDOO developed a leak and instead of trying to patch it, as I have slept on it for about 2 years, I deflated it, put it in the bag it came with and threw it away. This Intex, I had it out of the box an fully inflated in less than 10 minutes. Made the bed and laid down on it - aaahhhh! So, if you are in need of a spare bed for overnight guests on occasion OR you have had it with your lumpy old "regular" mattress and having sticker shock over the memory foam, purple, pillow top and other replacements, you might want to try an air mattress. Even if you only use it long enough to save enough money for one of those $500-$1000 mattress, this $75 mattress will allow you to sleep well, night after night after night.
