Pachira aquatica, commonly known as the Money Tree or Malabar Chestnut, is a tropical plant native to Central and South America. In cultivation, it is often styled with multiple young stems braided together while still flexible, creating the well-known Braided Money Tree form that has become a symbol of prosperity and good fortune in many cultures.

The tree produces glossy, palmate leaves, typically arranged in groups of five to seven leaflets that resemble an open hand. These bright green leaves are lush and vibrant, giving the plant a fresh, tropical look. When grown indoors, the braided trunk adds architectural interest and makes the plant particularly popular as both a decorative feature and a Feng Shui element, where it is believed to bring wealth and harmony.

Outdoors in its native range, Pachira aquatica can grow into a large tree producing edible nuts. Indoors, in its braided form, it usually reaches 1–2 metres in height, making it a manageable statement plant for homes and offices.

Braided Pachira aquatica – Care Guide

Light

Thrives in bright, indirect light. It will tolerate some lower light but growth may slow. Avoid direct harsh sunlight, which can scorch its leaves.

Watering

Water thoroughly when the top 3–5 cm of soil feels dry. Ensure excess water drains away and never allow the plant to sit in water, as this can cause root rot. Overwatering is the most common issue with Money Trees. In winter, reduce watering slightly.

Temperature and Humidity

  • Temperature: Prefers 18–26°C. Keep away from draughts and protect from cold temperatures below 12°C.

  • Humidity: Appreciates moderate to high humidity. Misting the leaves occasionally or using a humidifier will keep them looking fresh.

Soil and Potting

Use a peat-free, free-draining houseplant compost, ideally with added perlite or sand to improve aeration. Repot every 2–3 years in spring when roots outgrow the container.

Feeding

Feed once a month during spring and summer with a balanced liquid houseplant fertiliser. Feeding is not necessary in winter.

Pruning and Maintenance

Prune to control height and encourage branching by cutting back stems just above a node. Remove any yellowing or damaged leaves to maintain the plant’s health and appearance.

Growth and Maturity

Indoors, the Braided Money Tree typically grows 1–2 metres tall. Growth is steady but not rapid, making it easy to maintain as a floor plant.

Common Issues

  • Yellowing leaves: Usually caused by overwatering.

  • Brown leaf tips: Often due to low humidity or inconsistent watering.

  • Leaf drop: Stress from sudden environmental changes, such as moving location or draughts.

Background and Benefits

In Feng Shui tradition, the Money Tree is associated with good fortune, prosperity, and positive energy, especially when placed in living rooms or offices. Its braided trunk is said to “trap” good luck within. Beyond cultural symbolism, it is a resilient and attractive houseplant, with air-purifying properties and a strong tropical presence.

My Female GSD loves
Size: Medium (2.5"), Style: Fetch Pack 1, Size: Medium (2.5"), Style: Fetch Pack 1
Shasta is my smallest. Six in December (2025) along with her brother. She’s 100 lbs and outside, completely ball driven see last picture. Don’t let the size (2.5”) of these Chuck-It balls deter you. If your larger Breed dog has any orthopedic issues, has already torn their ACL etc, one has arthritis but wants to play. This size is perfect! Shazzy was born with several ortho issues. I don’t throw balls distance but right to her. This size and lighter weight assure even when Shazzy is spazzy w excitement, she’ll catch the ball mid air. The green balls are softer, and glow in the dark. In summer we can play well past dusk and I can see them! Her personality shows in the pictures. Playing ball is part of her. These balls are just perfect for her situation. Somehow they disappear, she loves making baskets, puts them in my tractor bucket, or my gardening bucket..then get put in burn pile, trash etc. I keep replacing them because she’d look day and night if we actually ran out!! 🙏✝️👍🏼👍🏼

Whistle away my friend!
Size: 2 Count (Pack of 1), Style: Pack of 2
Love it! My dog loves it! The people at the dog park love it! The whistle is the best thing about these balls but the hard durable rubber and the denseness of the ball really make it fly. Let me quickly breakdown each of these: First the sound is like a...well, whistle coming from a human but oscillating and slightly different. It helps the dogs track where it goes and helps them find it better when it is getting dark (while flying of course, not when it is stationary). It barely makes a sound when throwing it with the wind but really howls when throwing it into the wind. This is why you get this ball and most everyone at the dog park perks up and wonders what that is, asks about it, and thinks it is very cool; which it is! Next is the durable rubber which doesn't have a single bite mark or split yet in 4 months of constant daily play for about 1 1/2 hours every day! The dog chews it as he brings it back and other dogs steal the ball and run with it while "killing" it perpetually and it has held up great. I don't claim this is going to be Kong ball durable but it is very well chosen rubber. Last is the denseness of the ball which really makes to go far in a chuckit launcher. One doesn't really notice how far this goes until going back to a tennis ball and realizing how short a tennis ball goes compared to this. The whistler ball, and presumably other chuckit rubber balls (glow, irregular bounce), go 30-40% farther when I throw then using the longest chuckit thrower. This is excellent and wears my retriever out even faster; not to mention the rippling muscles he has from sprinting that whole way! Overall I got both ball several months ago and we started with the blue ball and haven't had to touch the orange one yet. This is his goto ball at the park and it is the most popular ball, bar none, for all the dogs to steal. The bright blue aspect, the rubber aspect, the sound, and exclusivity of it make it coveted by dogs and owners. I might be gushing and glowing over this ball a bit much but I tend to do that when something unexpected ends up being part of your everyday life and blows you away at how wonderful it is.

Great for dogs that are chewers
Size: 2 Count (Pack of 1), Style: Pack of 2
These are wonderful for our dog. The bright colors help us find them when our dog can't. The size is perfect to play fetch. Our dog will chew on it a bit and it stays together and does not fall apart. That is a big bonus because our dog is a chewer!
