It reaches a height of 30-60 cm with a spread of 22-30 cm. The persistent, papery calyx displays blue hues, adorned with small white central florets, resembling stars in the night sky - hence its poetic name. The oblong anthers are characteristic, with a natural flowering period from summer to early autumn (June-August), though this can be regulated through cultivation. This plant thrives in sunny, dry and cool conditions, while being intolerant to waterlogging and humidity. It demonstrates excellent drought and salt tolerance, preferring loose, fertile, well-drained slightly alkaline soils.
- Valued for its long-lasting floral display and colorfast calyx that retains hue when dried, it serves as an outstanding ornamental for flower beds, borders and rock gardens, while being particularly prized for cut and dried flower arrangements. Ecologically, it contributes to soil structure improvement and erosion prevention. In traditional medicine, its sweet-cool nature and flavonoid content provide heat-clearing, detoxifying, vision-improving, yin-nourishing, kidney-tonifying, swelling-reducing and pain-relieving properties.
