🌬️ Epiphytic plant without soil or pot • ✨ Pearly silver spiral foliage • ☀️ Bright indirect light • 💧 Misting + monthly soaking • 🐾 Non-toxic • 📏 Ø20 cm

The Tillandsia xerographica 'Super Silver', also known as the air plant, is a fascinating epiphytic plant native to the arid regions of Central and South America. It lives entirely without soil — its broad, spiraled silver leaves covered with velvety trichomes absorb moisture and nutrients directly from the surrounding air. The Super Silver XL variety is especially prized for its wide, very silvery leaves that give it a nearly metallic pearly texture, very sculptural.

Completely free from pot and substrate constraints, it is one of the most original plants in the catalog — and one of the few that is also non-toxic to cats and dogs, making it an ideal choice for homes with pets seeking a decorative plant without risk.

Which Tillandsia variety to choose?

The Tillandsia genus offers several very distinct shapes and sizes in the air plants collection of the catalog:

  • Tillandsia xerographica 'Super Silver' (this plant) — large, wide, pearly silver spiral leaves, Ø20 cm. The most sculptural and silvery in the range.
  • Tillandsia King Xero — XXL size with very wide and tightly curled leaves, spectacular posture. The choice for an even more imposing and monumental Tillandsia.
  • Tillandsia ionantha abdita — compact size, fine and short leaves that redden at maturity. The choice for a very colorful Tillandsia at flowering.
  • Tillandsia cyanea — fine upright leaves with a pink spathe and spectacular blue flowers. The choice for a very decorative flowering Tillandsia.
  • Mix 5 air Tillandsias — assortment of several varieties in small size. The choice for a varied aerial composition.

Light & placement

The Tillandsia Super Silver XL enjoys bright indirect light — this is the condition to maintain the intense silver color of its foliage and fully activate its trichomes. It is one of the rare houseplants that require no substrate, among the easiest plants for city dwellers seeking hassle-free green decoration.

  • Light: bright indirect — diffused natural light preserves the silver tone and activates the trichomes.
  • Avoid: overly dark rooms (slow growth, risk of rot), direct full sun (burns the trichomes), and confined spaces without air circulation.
  • Ideal placement: shelf, desk, decorative stand, living wall, or open terrarium — anywhere air circulates freely.
  • Temperature: 16 to 28 °C — tolerates seasonal variations well as long as air circulates.

Air circulation is as important as light for a Tillandsia — good ventilation after misting is essential to prevent rot at the center of the rosette.

Watering & care

The Tillandsia Super Silver XL lives on misting and soaking — two very simple actions that completely replace traditional watering. Its silver trichomes absorb water directly from the leaf surface, as detailed in our article on the light-humidity balance for epiphytes.

  • Misting: 1 to 2 times per week — increase frequency in summer if the air is dry.
  • Monthly soaking: fully immerse the plant in water for 15 to 20 minutes once a month.
  • Mandatory drying: after each soak, turn the plant upside down for 1 to 2 hours to drain any stagnant water from the center of the rosette.
  • In winter: reduce to weekly misting — excess moisture is more dangerous than lack of it.
  • Water: ideally rainwater or filtered — trichomes also capture lime scale and visibly whiten with hard tap water.

Never use hard water for misting a Tillandsia Super Silver — white deposits settle on the silver trichomes and permanently dull the characteristic pearly texture of this variety.

Decor ideas & plant pairings

The sculpted texture and pearly silver of the Tillandsia Super Silver XL make it a unique decorative piece — it can be placed in environments where no other plant can go, without pot or substrate constraints.

  • On a driftwood or metal stand, attach the Tillandsia with copper wire — the raw material of driftwood or industrial metal naturally complements the silvery, velvety texture for a very minimalist design effect.
  • In a glass cloche or open terrarium, place the Tillandsia on a bed of white gravel or light sand — the transparency of the glass highlights the spiral of the silver leaves and creates a very contemporary decorative piece on a table or console.
  • For a very graphic aerial wall composition, combine several Tillandsias of very different shapes and sizes on the same support — the wide spiral, compact star, and fine leaf variants create a very dynamic living artwork without any substrate or complex care.
  • In a matte white or black ceramic bowl, simply place the Tillandsia without fixing it — the neutral tones of the ceramic naturally complement the pearly silver foliage and create a very clean centerpiece. Choose a matte ceramic bowl wide enough to let the spiral leaves express themselves freely.

Verdeia tips

  • Always turn the plant upside down after soaking: this is the most important rule with Tillandsia — stagnant water in the center of the rosette causes basal rot within days, often irreversible. Dry upside down for at least 1 to 2 hours on a clean cloth before putting it back in place.
  • Ensure good air circulation around the plant: Tillandsias in confined spaces (closed terrarium, cupboard, corner without ventilation) suffer quickly — air circulation after misting is as essential as water itself to maintain the health of the trichomes.
  • Use rainwater or filtered water for misting and soaking: the silver trichomes of the Super Silver variety absorb everything they capture, including lime from tap water — white deposits quickly accumulate and dull the pearly texture that gives this variety its full decorative value.

My first experience with a Robot vacuum
Color: White
I am liking this robot vacuum. It is very easy to program and can be done from your phone. It has mapping capabilities which helps with learning the room. The remote is easy to use too. It picks up most dust particles and pet fur from rugs and bare floors. It has a wet floor mopping pad which is so helpful. Surprisingly it picks up more than you think. The dust cup holds quite a bit before you have to empty it. The little side brushes help with collecting the particles. It can go under some furniture and along the walls. You have several floor patterns that it can be programmed for. It is very quiet too. Recharging doesn’t take long either. It can even be programmed to vacuum while you are away. Instructions are downloaded through the app. My cats are very curious about how it moves about the rooms. So much fun to watch them. I really got a great bargain for this robot vacuum on Amazon. (I found that if you have clutter on the floors or cords under furniture you should remove and secure them before vacuuming.) It will find a way to go from floor to area rugs once it maps out the area. I am still learning the functions in the app👍🏾👍🏾😃

Piece of junk
Color: White
So many problems with this device. I have a one bedroom apartment with one bathroom and no carpet so it's all hardwood floor. You would think this device would be able to vacuum the entire place without problems right? I think it intentionally looks for places to get stuck. For instance I have electrical plugs underneath my desk pushed against the wall, and somehow it managed to get stuck in them. So I had to block that area with a box. Then it got stuck going over my bath mats. So when I vacuum I have to put them into the shower. Then somehow it managed to get stuck in a little area by the island in my kitchen. So I had to put a roll of paper towels there so it wouldn't go into that area. Then it got stuck under the wheels of my desk chair. So I had to block that area. One night, even though there's a big table on the side of my couch to block it, it figured out a way to get behind my couch and then stopped. It took me two days to find it. And that's the other thing. it doesn't have enough power to clean an entire one bedroom apartment. So even if it doesn't get stuck, I will find it in the middle of the floor with the battery drained. When I watched it I noticed that it will bang something and then it'll keep banging it a few times before moving on. And by moving on I mean it'll move 6 in and bang there a few times before moving on again. That's probably how it got stuck under the island. It couldn't fit the first time, so it kept pushing until finally it got jammed in there. I must say, however, it is amusing when it bangs into my foot and doesn't give up and tries to climb over my foot. So although I bought this thing the end of November, I was in the hospital and wasn't able to start using it until the third week in January. After a couple of weeks I wanted to return it, but unfortunately I can't, because the window to return it ended January 31st.

Not too shabby
Color: White
I was skeptical but I read the reviews before purchasing. I had a $500 Roomba previously that worked six months then died. Using the warranty on those is almost impossible. So I took a chance. Cons: will fling itself down ledges and stairs. Like any robot cleaner, hates cords and plastic bags. Gets stuck now and then. You need to rinse out dust filter each time. Pros: runs a LONG time. Picks up all the dust and hair my Roomba did. Much cheaper. Has an app that you can supposedly program. Not too noisy. Beeps if it needs help. Charges well. Cats dig it. All in all I would buy one again. Robot vacuums are not for grime, they are for dust, hair, bits of cat litter. Keep that in mind. But in keeping your floor free of cords and debris that might trip it up, it helps you to be tidier overall.
