Cotton Candy Mango Tree Overview

The Cotton Candy Mango (Mangifera indica) is a cultivar known for its unique and deliciously sweet flavor, reminiscent of the sugary treat it’s named after. With a smooth, fibrous-free flesh that’s often described as "velvety" or "creamy," the fruit is incredibly aromatic and has a balanced sweetness with hints of tropical flavor and a mild tanginess. The flesh is a pale yellow to light orange, and the flavor is often described as one of the best among mango varieties, offering a perfect balance of sugar and acidity.

Common Names

  • Cotton Candy Mango
  • Fairchild Mango (sometimes referred to as the Fairchild Cotton Candy Mango due to its development at the Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden in Florida)

Taste and Fruit Characteristics

The Cotton Candy Mango is highly regarded for its intensely sweet and fragrant flavor. When ripe, the fruit has a soft texture, minimal fibrousness, and a rich, velvety pulp that is incredibly enjoyable to eat. The flavor is not just sweet but has tropical nuances that include hints of pineapple, coconut, and peach. This variety is considered perfect for fresh eating, juicing, or adding to smoothies.

Best Growing Environment

The Cotton Candy Mango thrives in subtropical to tropical climates where warm temperatures and ample sunshine are available year-round. It is best suited to regions where the average temperature remains between 70F to 100F (21°C to 38°C), as mango trees are sensitive to frost and prolonged cold temperatures.

Mango trees generally need a well-draining soil with good fertility and a slightly acidic to neutral pH. A location with good air circulation and full sunlight (at least 8 hours per day) is ideal to promote healthy growth and high fruit yield.

Average Height and Growth Rate

The Cotton Candy Mango tree is a medium to large-sized tree that can reach a height of 10 to 15 feet (3 to 4.5 meters) in a home garden setting, although under ideal conditions, it may grow larger. It typically has a spreading canopy, so it’s important to allow enough space for the tree to grow both upward and outward. The growth rate is considered moderate to fast, with an annual growth of around 12–24 inches (30–60 cm), depending on soil and care.

Sun Requirements

As a tropical tree, the Cotton Candy Mango thrives in full sun. This means the tree requires at least 8 to 10 hours of direct sunlight each day to ensure vigorous growth and fruit production. Insufficient sunlight can result in poor flowering and fruit set, as well as slower growth. Mango trees are highly sun-dependent and will struggle to thrive in shaded or low-light areas.

Cold Hardiness

The Cotton Candy Mango tree is cold-sensitive and requires a warm climate to thrive. It is hardy in USDA zones 9b–11, where the temperature rarely drops below 30F (-1°C). Below these temperatures, mango trees can experience frost damage, which can harm both the tree and the fruit. In regions with colder winters, mango trees can be grown in containers and moved indoors during the winter months to protect them from frost.

Water Requirements

Cotton Candy Mango trees have moderate water needs. While they are relatively drought-tolerant once established, they still require consistent moisture, especially during the growing season, to produce quality fruit. The tree should be watered regularly, but the soil must be allowed to dry out between waterings to prevent root rot. It is important not to overwater the tree, as mangoes prefer well-drained soils. In general, aim for watering once or twice a week during dry periods and less frequently during the rainy season.

Planting Guide

  • Site Selection: Choose a location with full sun and well-draining soil. Avoid low-lying areas where water may collect, as mango trees do not tolerate waterlogged conditions.
  • Soil Preparation: Mango trees prefer soil with a pH between 5.5 and 7.5. If your soil is heavy clay, amend it with organic matter to improve drainage.
  • Planting: Dig a hole as deep as the root ball and twice as wide. Place the tree in the hole and fill it back with a mixture of native soil and compost to provide initial fertility. Water the tree deeply after planting.
  • Spacing: Space trees at least 15 to 20 feet apart to allow room for growth. Cotton Candy Mango trees can develop wide, spreading canopies.

Fertilizing Cotton Candy Mango Tree

Proper fertilization is crucial for healthy growth and abundant fruit production.

  • First Year (Establishment Period): During the first year, the tree should be fertilized once every 6–8 weeks with a balanced fertilizer, such as a 10-10-10 NPK (Nitrogen-Phosphorus-Potassium) fertilizer. This promotes strong root development and overall growth. Avoid over-fertilizing during the first year, as it can stress the young tree.

  • Second Year and Beyond (Growing Period): From the second year onward, begin using a specialized mango fertilizer or a fertilizer with a higher potassium (K) content, such as 8-3-9 or 6-3-10. Potassium helps promote flowering and fruiting. Fertilize every 8–10 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer).

  • Pre-Flowering (Late Winter to Early Spring): In early spring, just before the flowering period, apply a high-phosphorus fertilizer to encourage blooming and fruit set. A formula like 12-55-6 works well to stimulate flowering.

  • Post-Harvest (Late Summer to Fall): After the harvest, apply a balanced fertilizer again to maintain the tree’s health and prepare it for the next season. Avoid fertilizing in the winter months when the tree is dormant.

Wonderful
Size: 9 Inch, Color: Red
Just bought my second one for my German shepherd. 1st one I bought a year ago. She managed to pop it within a few days. She still was able to play with it by grabbing ahold of the straps. Takes it everywhere. We call it her tether ball. Should've seen her when we got the new one out of the box. Hasn't left it alone since.

Great for dog self play
Size: 6 Inch, Color: Red, Size: 6 Inch, Color: Red
So much fun for my puppy. Easy to grab and throw for him to play alone. Durable for a medium dog. This is his favorite toy. I also bought one for my friends cattle dog puppy who went bonkers with it. Yet her dog liked to chew the tags off. So I wouldn’t recommend for chewers.

Fun to fetch
Size: 5 Inch, Color: Red, Size: 5 Inch, Color: Red
Perfect size for my 1 yr old Cavapoo that is ball obsessed. This ball is fun to toss around in the yard to exercise and wear out my energetic boy. Perfect for after my work day when I don’t have the energy to match his energy level. He gets to run and chase and I can enjoy his playtime too. Overall the ball is durable and I have confidence it will last for a very long time. We have 2 sizes, small and medium, for my 30 pound athletic pup. He enjoys both equally.

Dog loves them
Size: 6 Inch, Color: Independence Day
My dog loved the first ball I got her, so I got her a second one. Both hhavr been very durable (she likes to puncture things with her teeth). I left each ball slightly deflated, so they were still firm, but she could bite them without issues. She has not punctured either ball yet. I did have to watch her because she started trying to chew the tabs off because she was bored. She has not chewed one off, just started thinking about it, and did a tiny bit of damage to one tab. She loves these balls. We have played tug of wat with them too, so yhe tabs are sturdy, and so is the ball. The dog did not care what collar she got, so I grabbed the least expensive one, and the 6 inch. She is a medium sized dog with razor teeth, and these work great.
