A Hardy Fig for Home Gardeners in Cooler Climates

The Chicago Hardy Fig Tree is one of the best fig trees for homeowners who want to grow fresh figs beyond the warmest regions. It is widely valued for its strong cold hardiness, dependable regrowth, and ability to produce fruit even after winter damage in colder climates.

That reliability is what makes it such a standout. For gardeners who love figs but need a tougher, more adaptable variety, Chicago Hardy offers a way to bring Mediterranean-style fruit growing into a broader range of home landscapes.

Sweet Dark Figs with Rich Backyard Appeal

The fruit is one of the biggest reasons homeowners choose the Chicago Hardy Fig. The figs ripen dark purple to deep brownish-purple with reddish flesh inside, offering a sweet, rich flavor that is excellent for fresh eating, preserves, baking, and home harvests right from the tree.

That fruit quality adds real value in the landscape. Because ripe figs are delicate and highly perishable, growing them at home gives homeowners access to a fresher, more flavorful fruit experience than they can usually find in stores.

Large Tropical-Looking Leaves Add Ornamental Value

The Chicago Hardy Fig Tree is not only useful for its harvest. Its broad, deeply lobed leaves create a lush, tropical look throughout the growing season, giving it strong ornamental appeal in patios, garden beds, and edible landscapes.

That foliage helps the plant do double duty in the landscape. It offers the look of a bold ornamental plant while also serving as a productive fruit tree, which makes it especially appealing in home gardens where every plant should contribute beauty as well as function.

Self-Pollinating and Easy to Add to the Garden

One of the biggest reasons Chicago Hardy remains so popular is its convenience. It is self-pollinating, which means a single tree can produce fruit on its own without needing a second fig tree nearby.

That makes it an especially approachable choice for homeowners with limited space. It simplifies fruit growing while still offering a real harvest, whether planted in the ground or grown in a large container.

A Great Choice for Containers, Patios, and Protected Sites

The Chicago Hardy Fig Tree performs best in full sun and well-drained soil, where it can grow vigorously and ripen fruit. It is especially useful in containers because the tree can be moved or protected more easily in colder climates, though it can also be planted in the ground where winter protection is available.

For homeowners who want a self-pollinating fig tree with strong cold hardiness, sweet fruit, and edible landscape appeal, the Chicago Hardy Fig Tree is an excellent choice. It offers harvest value, attractive foliage, and one of the most cold-tolerant fig-growing options available for home gardeners.

BRAVO!
Format: Kindle
Bravely written account of a very painful time in a persons life. Told with out malice and highlights the awful task of having to go through a divorce navigating your way under almost suffocating circumstances. Be strong and realize that whether a person wants it or not, you are forced face the fact that you are making the most important financial decsion of your life.

Surprisingly Unputdownable
Format: Kindle
I read saw several reviews that said this book wasn’t really about anything, and they were right. There was no big drama, no fighting, no headline news. But there was something in the writing that felt profound and I couldn’t stop reading. And I’m glad I didn’t. In the end for me, this was a story about a marriage, and choices that were made and the strength of a woman who wouldn’t be silent, and the writing that brought so much emotion with it that I wound up feeling all of it so deeply. And when a writer can create those feelings in me, then her book was definitely worth reading. I highly recommend this book - I don’t think you’ll regret the time you spend in its pages. I know I didn’t.

Slightly Interesting
Format: Kindle
First, I think Belle is a great writer. There was a lot of effort put into making this a very readable book. I also think that what happened to her really was terrible. Her husband 100% was wrong in what he did to her with the affair and his disappearance. Ultimately, her marriage prior to the betrayal seemed very superficial. She acknowledges that she chose the comforts of wealth over a close relationship. She had a part time husband/father and honestly it's not surprising that he left. He was barely there to begin. Her absolute terror in imagining that she would drop down from the top 0.1% down to around the top 1% was not the compelling tragedy that she seems to think it is. Her bemoaning of the loss of ultra luxuries tended to diminish the emotional toll of her plight. The book is laced through with the eventual end that her husband is going to take his assets and half of hers, but it never happens. I think she wants to relate the uncertainty and fear that she had, but it comes off as fake panic. In the end, it's a sad story, but it was very predictable. It's a story about a woman who outsourced her responsibilities, who doesn't know how to operate without extreme wealth, and who shudders at the prospect of having to work a job. It was a short book, but 3 times longer than necessary.

Raw and Honest
Format: Hardcover
I admit I purchased this book because of all the hype, but also because I have been, since childhood, intrigued by her various family legacies (Burden, Vanderbilt, Cushing, Fairbanks), and their alliances (Whitney, Astor, Roosevelt, etc). I was not sure what to expect, but I am grateful I read this book. Being a queer man I probably am not the core audience for this book, I can attest it is still a great read. Ms. Burden is amazingly candid and honest in a way I don't think most people in her situation would be. I can already tell that there will probably be countless reviews about how privileged her life was even during and after her divorce, and how unrelatable this book is for many people, but then you are missing something. If you want to judge Ms. Burden for things she had no control over then you should examine your own life. My hat off to the author for being so open about such private matters in her life, and also for doing a great job shielding her children in life and in the book. I hope it is true that there is a movie/series being made that will star Gwyneth Paltrow. I love Gwyneth, and if the author won't play herself I think Gwyneth is an amazing choice for her poise, acting ability, and class. Can't recommend this enough! OH, I am curious to know if anyone who read this book read Wendy Burden's memoir Dead End Gene Pool. I LOVE that book, but it is so very very different, and I am curious to know if Wendy and Amanda get along irl.

Daily devotional with ease.
Format: Imitation Leather
This is a great little devotional book for men. I bought two, one for me and one for my son. I keep mine at my desk at work and read it each morning and I enjoy the insightful quotes and verses that help me start my day. It truly only takes about a minute or two to read through everything and the verses are actually written out on the page with the reference. I know there are a lot of devotionals out there that you can select from, but I like this one because it’s small and compact and acutely directed towards men. The small size is perfect, the price is excellent, and the daily devotionals are spot on.
