It is relatively cold-hardy and shade-tolerant, with some tolerance to waterlogging and barren soil, but it grows best in well-drained, fertile, loose soils in sunny, wind-sheltered locations. When planting, provide walls, trellises, or other supports to accommodate its climbing habit. It grows rapidly and has a long lifespan.
