Native to the humid tropical forests of Southeast Asia, the Aglaonema 'B.J. Freedman' develops large dark green oval leaves marked with very graphic silver veins and patterns that subtly play with the light. Its high tolerance for partial shade makes it one of the most versatile plants in our Aglaonema collection and our partial shade plants.

Which Aglaonema variety to choose?

The Aglaonema genus offers a remarkable palette of colors and patterns — here are the main varieties in the catalog:

  • Aglaonema 'B.J. Freedman' (this plant) — large dark green leaves with very graphic silver veins, generous form (H70 cm | Pot Ø24 cm). The largest and most sophisticated version.
  • Aglaonema 'Silver Bay' — bright silver-green foliage, more diffuse patterns, compact form. The brightest silver version.
  • Aglaonema 'Reina Plata' — silver and green foliage, elegant patterns (H45 cm | Pot Ø14 cm). The classic and compact silver version.
  • Aglaonema 'Greenlight' — bright light green foliage with subtle patterns. The freshest and brightest version.
  • Aglaonema 'Keylime' — vivid lemon green and graphic foliage. The most vibrant and colorful version.
  • Aglaonema 'Maria' — green foliage with silver reflections, classic patterns. The most traditional and accessible version.

Light & location

  • Light: partial shade to soft indirect light — tolerates low light better than most plants of this size. Avoid direct sunlight which burns leaves and fades silver veins. It is one of the best large plants for low-light rooms.
  • Ideal: living room, office, bedroom, bathroom, or room with natural light but no direct sun.
  • Temperature: 18 to 27 °C — sensitive to cold drafts and sudden temperature changes.
  • Substrate: light, rich, and well-draining — universal potting soil mixed with perlite.

Watering & care

  • Watering: moderate — allow the surface of the substrate to dry between waterings. Yellowing leaves almost always indicate overwatering — mastering watering is the key skill to acquire for this species.
  • Frequency: about once a week in spring-summer, reduced in winter.
  • Drainage: essential — pot with drainage holes and well-draining substrate.
  • Humidity: prefers 60–70% humidity — mist occasionally or place near other plants.
  • Fertilizer: every 2 to 4 weeks in spring-summer, diluted liquid fertilizer for green plants.

Decor ideas & plant combinations

  • Aglaonema composition: pair it with a Aglaonema 'Keylime' lemon green and a Aglaonema 'Silver Bay' silver — three varieties of the same species, three very different palettes (dark green / lemon green / silver) for a very coherent and easy-care arrangement.
  • In a low-light office or bedroom: its 70 cm size and tolerance for partial shade make it one of the best large plants for spaces without direct sun — its silver veins subtly interact with artificial light.
  • Ideal pot: a white Brussels pot highlights the dark green and silver veins with sharp contrast, or a natural Selin basket for a warmer, more organic vibe.

Verdeia tips

  • Keep away from drafts and air conditioners: Aglaonema is particularly sensitive to sudden temperature changes — even a brief cold draft can cause yellowing or blackening of leaf edges.
  • Dust leaves once a month: dust dulls the shine and hides the visual effect of silver veins — gently wiping each leaf with a damp cloth restores the foliage’s graphic elegance.
  • Repot every 2 to 3 years in spring: into a slightly larger pot — a well-managed repotting with fresh substrate boosts growth and maintains a generous, dense form.

Cute story about social anxiety
Format: Hardcover
I picked this up because I saw it on the shelf in the library. The story was written in a way that was relatable to children who might have social anxiety and helps the child realize that these are normal feelings. The illustrations went with the story very well and were perfect for a child to enjoy with the story. I highly recommend this book.

Adorable and surprising!
Format: Hardcover
The artwork in this book is simply adorable. The cute little animals. The fun tunnels to follow. The subtle textures added to the art (look at the sheet music in the tunnels!) And all of the titles of the books each animal has. Kids (and adults) will love looking over all of the details. And my favorite, and surprising bit, is that Mole (and a new friend) are allowed to remain introverted. They're not forced to change at the end into a situation they're not comfortable with. I think this is an amazing ending and one that you wouldn't see in many other books dealing with this situation. What a wonderful book!

A shy mole is both true to his friend and true to himself.
Format: Hardcover
Mole makes cream puffs and braves a long underground trip to his friend Rabbit's noisy party. Noisy parties are not for Mole so he gives Rabbit the gift and is on his way. But all is not lost. Another guest, hidden behind a lovely bouquet, is of the same mindset and the presence of these two loyal but shy friends does not seem to be a complete accident. Mole's honest monologue is endearing and the above and below ground scenery of the animal community is sweet.
