Zijn bijnaam ‘Drakenbloedboom’ komt van het hars van de Dracaena, wat rood is en “drakenbloed” wordt genoemd. De associatie met draken en de opvallende rode hars heeft ertoe geleid dat de naam "drakenboom" in veel talen wordt gebruikt om verschillende soorten van het geslacht Dracaena aan te duiden. Een bijrolletje in Game of Thrones zat er alleen helaas niet in.
