The Perfect Dual-Purpose Tree for California Gardens

The pineapple guava tree gives you ornamental beauty and edible fruit in one compact, drought tolerant plant-ideal for California gardens where every square foot should work hard.

Also known as acca sellowiana pineapple guava, feijoa, or feijoa sellowiana, this evergreen shrub from South America brings silvery foliage, unusual white flowers with red stamens, and sweet-tart fall fruit to your edible garden. It solves the common landscape tradeoff: you do not have to choose between a beautiful small tree and a productive fruit tree.

Pineapple guava thrives in full sun and well-draining soil, preferably with a slightly acidic to neutral pH between 6.0 and 6.5. It also grows well in USDA Hardiness Zones 8-11 and prefers full sun or part shade, with slightly acidic soil for optimal growth-making it especially useful for coastal gardens, moderate summers, and many subtropical climates across California.

Why You’ll Love Your Pineapple Guava Tree

  • Edible Flowers and Fruit – In late spring to early summer, pineapple guava produces showy white flowers with long red stamens and yellow pollen. The petals are edible, sweet, and sometimes compared to marshmallows, making them a delightful addition to salads and desserts. In early fall, the tree produces egg shaped fruits with edible fruit pulp that tastes like a mix between guava and minty pineapple.

  • Year-Round Beauty – Pineapple guava, or Acca sellowiana, is an evergreen shrub that can reach heights of 10-15 feet and is known for attractive silvery foliage and unusual flowers. Its leathery leaves stay handsome through winter, giving your garden structure even when other fruit trees are bare.

  • Low Maintenance – Mature pineapple guava trees are drought-tolerant, but young trees require weekly deep watering during their first year. The pineapple guava tree is known for its pest and disease resistance, and is generally untroubled by deer. Minimal pest issues may include black scale or fruit flies in some regions, but this tree is typically easier to manage than many edible fruit options.

  • Versatile Growth – Grow it as a shrub, large shrub, informal hedge, multi-trunk specimen, or small tree with a single trunk. Regular pruning helps shape the branches, encourage new growth, and maintain size without heavy pruning.

  • Wildlife Friendly – Birds and bees are the primary pollinators of pineapple guava, with hand pollination achieving nearly 100% fruit set. The flowers attract beneficial pollinators, while mature fruit can support garden wildlife if you leave a few to fall.

What Makes It Different

Most fruit trees ask you to compromise: they are productive but seasonal, ornamental but not edible, or too large for smaller California yards.

Pineapple Guava Tree provides:

  • Unique Edible Flowers – Pineapple guava flowers have white petals, red stamens, and a sweet edible quality that makes them useful fresh in salads and desserts. Unlike a true guava, pineapple guava belongs to the myrtle family, and its genus name Acca reflects its distinct botanical identity.

  • Exceptional Drought Tolerance – Unlike many fruit trees, mature pineapple guava is drought tolerant once established. Regular deep watering is still essential during flowering and fruit formation, especially in dry conditions, to prevent fruit drop and ensure quality harvests. Mulch and organic matter help protect shallow roots and keep soil moisture steady without standing water.

  • Compact Size – Pineapple guava naturally fits smaller landscapes. It can be maintained as a small tree, screen, or evergreen shrub, usually about 10-15 feet tall with an equal spread when allowed to mature, or kept tighter with pruning. It also tolerates coastal salt spray, light shade, and partial shade, though full sun gives the best bloom and fruit production.

How It Works in Your Garden

  1. Plant and Establish
Plant pineapple guava in well drained soil with good organic matter, where it receives full sun to partial shade. Pineapple guava thrives in full sun and well-draining soil, preferably with a slightly acidic to neutral pH between 6.0 and 6.5. Water deeply after planting, and keep young trees on weekly deep watering during the first year.

  2. Seasonal Beauty Cycle
In spring, the plant pushes new growth and prepares to bloom. By late spring or early summer, white flowers with long red stamens open and attract bees and birds. For best fruit production, pineapple guava requires a minimum of 50 hours of chilling temperatures during winter, and it is sensitive to extreme heat and frost. Flower production in pineapple guava is poor in areas with fewer than 50 hours of chilling, which is essential for fruit quality.

  3. Fall Harvest
Fruit develops through summer and begins to ripen in early fall. Pineapple guava fruits are best harvested when they begin to fall from the tree, indicating ripeness, and can also be picked when they are firm and allowed to ripen at room temperature. To prevent bruising during harvesting, place a tarp or cloth under the tree to catch the fruit as it falls, and handle the fruit gently when picking. Enjoy tree ripened fruit fresh, or use the pulp in jellies, desserts, and salads.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long until it produces fruit?
Fruit production usually begins about 2-3 years after planting when you start with a grafted or cutting-grown named pineapple guava plant. Seed-grown plants can take longer and may produce less predictable fruit quality.

Does it need a pollinator?
Some varieties are described as self fertile, but pineapple guava flowers are often self-incompatible. For reliable fruit production, plant two or more named types close enough for bees and birds to move pollen between them. Cross pollination improves fruit set, fruit size, and harvest quality. Hand pollination can achieve nearly 100% fruit set.

How much water does it need?
Young trees need weekly deep watering during their first year. Mature pineapple guava trees are drought-tolerant, but regular deep watering is essential during flowering and fruit formation, especially in dry conditions, to prevent fruit drop and ensure quality harvests. Avoid standing water, because pineapple guava needs well drained soil.

Can I grow it in a container?
Yes. Pineapple guava can grow in a large container if you provide well drained soil, full sun to light shade, regular watering, mulch, and occasional pruning. Container plants need more attentive watering than in-ground trees because shallow roots dry faster.

When is the fruit ready to eat?
Mature fruit is ready when it begins to fall from the tree. You can also pick firm fruit and allow it to ripen at room temperature. For the best tree ripened fruit, place a tarp or cloth under the tree, collect fallen fruit promptly, and handle each fruit gently to avoid bruising.

What does pineapple guava taste like?
The flavor of pineapple guava fruit is often described as a mix between guava and minty pineapple. The pulp is aromatic and sweet-tart, excellent to eat fresh or use in jellies, desserts, and salads.

Will extreme heat or frost affect it?
Yes. Pineapple guava needs at least 50 hours of winter chill for strong flower production and fruit quality. It can be sensitive to extreme heat, which may reduce flavor, and frost can damage flowers or immature fruit.

Finally, a Volufiline Product That Isn’t Just a Tiny Sprinkle in the Formula
I bought this because I have been trying to find a Volufiline product that actually makes sense. There has been so much hype around Volufiline lately, but a lot of products only include a tiny amount and then market it like it is the main feature. That is why this one caught my attention. The Ordinary is clearly stating 92% Volufiline with 1% Palmitoyl Isoleucine, so this feels much more direct and less gimmicky than many of the products I have tried. As someone with 52-year-old post-menopausal dry mature skin, I am realistic about what a product like this can and cannot do. This is not going to reverse time, rebuild your face, lift sagging skin, or create permanent volume. That is not how topical skincare works. But if you are looking for a targeted product that can give a temporary plumper, smoother-looking effect in certain areas, this is one of the better Volufiline options I have used. The texture feels more like a lightweight oil-serum than a watery serum. Because of that, I personally prefer using it over moisturizer or mixing a small amount into a cream before applying it to the areas where I want that softer, fuller look. I would not just smear this all over my face like a normal serum. It works best as a targeted product. Ingredient-wise, the formula is intentionally simple. Volufiline itself is based on Anemarrhena asphodeloides root extract in an oil-soluble base, and this also includes Palmitoyl Isoleucine, which fits the plumping/skin-conditioning concept. The fact that this is not padded with a long list of filler ingredients is part of why I like it. It feels focused. I also like that it is fragrance-free. That matters to me because products used around expression lines, cheeks, and delicate areas can become irritating quickly if they are loaded with fragrance. I did not find this irritating, but the box does mention that a slight tingling can happen, so patch testing makes sense. In terms of results, I noticed more of a temporary cosmetic smoothing and plumping effect than a dramatic transformation. That is exactly what I expected. It makes certain areas look a little softer and less dry-looking, especially when used with a good moisturizer. For mature skin, that can make a real visual difference, even if it is not structural or permanent. Who may like this? Someone who has been curious about Volufiline but wants a more concentrated, straightforward formula instead of a cream that barely contains any. Also someone who understands that this is about temporary cosmetic plumping and skin softness, not actual facial reshaping. Who may not like it? If you dislike oil-based textures, want instant dramatic volume, or expect filler-like results, this will probably disappoint you. Overall, I really like this. It is one of the few Volufiline products I have tried that feels honest about what it is, and the higher concentration makes it more appealing than many of the overhyped options out there.

Promising Skincare Product with Clean Ingredients
I have always loved this brand and have purchased many of their skincare products in the past, so I was excited to try their Volufiline after seeing how popular it has become on TikTok. A lot of people online claim it helps plump the skin and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles without needing injections, which definitely caught my attention. For the price, I think it is a pretty reasonable product if it actually delivers results. From what I understand, this is not a product that gives instant results and it can take at least three months or longer of consistent use before you really notice a difference. Because of that, I cannot honestly say yet whether it works or not, but I plan to continue using it and will update my review over time if I start seeing visible changes. I also purchased a separate roller ball attachment for the bottle because it makes application much easier and more precise. Without the roller attachment, you would mostly be applying the product with your fingers, which can apparently cause your fingers themselves to become plumper from repeated contact. As always, one of the things I appreciate most about this brand is the transparency and focus on clean ingredients. Their products always feel thoughtfully formulated, and I like knowing exactly what I am putting on my skin. Overall, I am hopeful about this product and excited to see the long-term results.

Good skincare. Just okay for wrinkles and fine lines
I’m not sure it’s filling in wrinkles but it’s not hurting either. I kind of think once your a certain age there isn’t a lot of change that happens with surface level products. It’s kind of more about slowing the aging process versus reversing it. Reversing may only happen in a surgeons office or by treatment from a medical esthetician. That being said I do think this product is offering me support by slowing down the aging process and reducing new lines and wrinkles. My skin definitely has a dewy appearance after using this product. The product is lightweight and goes on like a light oil. It is a tad greasy when it’s first applied but it does absorb well. I try to put this on when I have time to let it absorb a little but I have also been in a rush and had to go straight into makeup application after using. I didn’t have any issues with the quick transition. As with most of the Ordinary line the prices are economical for skincare. I give this 4 stars only because I didn’t really see a change/improvement in my current fine lines and wrinkles. I do think overall it’s offering some benefits. The bottle is small but the amount needed per application is small. You have to shake the product out of a little restricter cap which is kind of annoying. I think a tiny dropper would make for better dispensing and less waste. As with all my facial serums and skincare products, I always rub any remaining product on the tops of my hands.

Let’s Be Honest… I Bought This Hoping for Magic
Let’s be honest-anytime a product says “plumping” or “volume,” my expectations immediately split into two categories: absolutely nothing happens, or I convince myself something happened because I spent money on it. This one actually surprised me. The texture is lightweight but nourishing, and because it’s anhydrous, it feels a little richer without being greasy or heavy. I started using a small amount consistently in areas where my skin looked a little tired or less full, and over time my skin definitely started looking smoother, healthier, and more refreshed overall. One thing I really appreciate is that it doesn’t just sit on top of the skin making you shiny for five minutes and then disappear into disappointment. It absorbs well, layers nicely with the rest of my routine, and leaves my skin feeling soft instead of sticky. The biggest thing I noticed is that my skin just looks more “awake” and healthy lately-like I’ve been drinking enough water, sleeping properly, and making responsible life choices…which may or may not be true. I’ve tried a lot of skincare products that sounded impressive and did very little. This one actually earned a permanent spot in the routine.

Good product
I've used a few different volufiline’s and I like this one best. You get a tingling sensation that you don't get from other brands. Most of them are around the same price but this brand seems to have a bit of a larger bottle. I recommend purchasing this product. My smile lines are reducing significantly. I stopped putting it on my under eyes because I read somewhere it can make them worse. You also have to continue using it to keep the changes.
