Ruda Herb Care Guide

Introduction

Rue herb, also known as Rueda or Ruda, is a popular herb in many Latin American countries, known for its medicinal and culinary uses. With its pungent aroma and flavor, Ruda herb is a great addition to many dishes, and its health benefits make it a sought-after ingredient. In this care guide, we'll show you how to grow and care for Ruda herb, so you can enjoy its many benefits.

Lighting

Rue herb prefers full sun to partial shade, making it a great choice for indoor and outdoor gardens. Place it in a south-facing window or under grow lights for optimal growth.

Watering

Rue herb requires consistent moisture, especially when young. Water it when the top inch of soil feels dry, and avoid overwatering, which can lead to root rot.

Temperature

Rue herb thrives in temperatures between 65°F (18°C) and 75°F (24°C).

Soil

Use a well-draining potting mix to prevent waterlogged soil.

Fertilization

Feed Rue herb with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer during the growing season (spring and summer). Dilute the fertilizer to half the recommended strength to avoid burning the roots.

Pruning

Prune Rue herb regularly to encourage bushy growth and prevent legginess. Pinch off flower buds to direct energy towards leaf growth.

Pest Control

Check Rue herb regularly for pests like spider mites, mealybugs, and scale. Treat infestations promptly with insecticidal soap or neem oil.

Propagation

Propagate Rue herb through stem cuttings, division, or seed. Take 4-6 inch stem cuttings, remove lower leaves, and plant in moist soil. Keep the soil warm and humid until roots develop.

Common Problems

- Root rot: Overwatering can lead to root rot. Improve drainage and reduce watering.
- Pests: Regularly inspect and treat for pests.
- Legginess: Prune regularly to promote bushy growth.

My big dogs FAVE!
Pattern Name: Chipmunk, Pattern Name: Chipmunk
These are the absolute best! We bought one in store over the holidays because they don’t have the stuffing that dogs like to pull out. My big dog thinks it’s his baby, but it’s light enough for my small dogs. As it got tattered from being carried, fetched, and bathed… we needed a replacement. He doesn’t do anything without his baby. He immediately took to this as it wasn’t brand new. Success with the replacement. I will definitely be buying again, because nobody one wants a sad pup.

Airedale tough!
Color: Rubber Chew Toy, Size: Large
We have two young Airedale Terriers and I thought this would be a good inside toy for them to tug. And I was right! Very happily so. I have to admit I was surprised when I first saw it; it seemed so small. But the thing stretches and springs back to shape. We’ve had it about 2 weeks now and it is constantly played with. Absolutely the best toy! Very interactive either alone (it rolls) or with us or they play together. I am surprised how tough it is with all the constant rough play. Highly recommend!!!

Small, but twisty and fun looking. Seems relatively sturdy, though doesn't look indestructible at all.
Color: Rubber Chew Toy, Size: Large
SLIGHTLY disappointed because I thought this was bigger than it is. If you squish it all in close, it's maybe one and a half times the size of a tennis ball. (Of course, the size is probably listed; I think I just assumed, so my fault.) That being said, it's entertainingly twisty and squishy, though the rubber seems relatively sturdy. I'm not yet positive if it will hold up to the 8 month retriever/lab mix it's intended for; he tends to rip instantly through anything much less sturdy than kong natural rubber. But it seems like something that will amuse him, so we're going to give it a shot at Christmas.
