Philodendron asplundii wächst hemi-epiphytisch und ist auf das Amazonasbecken beschränkt. Die Verbreitung reicht vom südlichen Venezuela und Französisch-Guayana bis nach Kolumbien, Ecuador bis Peru. Diese Art kommt in Höhen von 150-2500 m in tropischen Feuchtwäldern und vormontanen Feuchtwäldern vor.
Anmerkungen:
Die zweite, registrierte Aufsammlung dieser sehr großblättrigen Art fand durch den schwedischen Botaniker Eric Asplund 1956 in Ecuador statt. Die Erstaufsammlung hatten 1929 E. P. Killip & A. C. Smith am Río Huallaga in Peru durchgeführt. Da bereits existierende Namen die Verwendung der Namen von Killip oder Smith ausschließen, wurde die Art zu Ehren von Asplund benannt.
Eric Asplund war einer der ersten Sammler in Ecuador und verantwortlich für das Sammeln vieler neuer Araceae-Arten.
