Alocasia macrorrhiza, commonly known as Giant Taro or Elephant Ear, is a spectacular tropical plant admired for its massive, glossy, heart-shaped leaves. Position
Giant Taro thrives in sun or partial shade and prefers a warm, humid environment. It does well in sheltered areas protected from harsh winds. While sun-hardened plants tolerate full sun, best results are achieved with morning sun and afternoon shade in hotter climates.
Growth
This fast-growing Alocasia reaches an impressive height of 2–3 metres with a spread of about 1–1.5 meters. Its large leaves and upright growth habit make it ideal for creating a tropical effect in large garden beds, as a focal plant, or as a statement plant indoors in well-lit spacious areas.
Planting Guide
Alocasia macrorrhiza grows best in well-drained, rich soil that retains moisture. Plant outdoors, spacing plants at least 1.5-2 metres apart to allow for full growth. When grown indoors, use a high-quality, well-draining potting mix. Position at soil level, water deeply, and apply a thick layer of mulch to retain soil moisture.
Plant Care
Water regularly to keep the soil consistently moist, especially during warm weather or the growing season. This plant loves humidity, so misting the leaves or placing a humidifier nearby is beneficial, especially indoors. Fertilize every 4–6 weeks during spring and summer with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer to promote robust growth. Prune away any yellow or damaged leaves as needed to maintain its appearance.
