Anthurium Hookeri Black Dragon – A Rare, Exotic Jewel with Dark Green Foliage

The Anthurium Hookeri Black Dragon is a stunning and rare bird’s nest Anthurium, known for its thick, dark green, almost black leaves with a glossy, leathery texture. This unique variety is perfect for plant collectors who love bold, sculptural plants with an otherworldly appearance.

Wild Texture Dossier
A bold bird’s-nest anthurium with heavy, crocodile-skin corrugation and a deep, inky green ground. ‘Black Dragon’ holds an upright, self-supporting crown that reads architectural and rugged—perfect when you want foliage with attitude.

Spec Highlights

  • Botanical: Anthurium hookeri ‘Black Dragon’ (bird’s-nest type)
  • Habit: upright rosette; stout petioles; broad, paddle-like blades
  • Surface: bullate (heavily pebbled) texture; satin-to-matte finish; thick leaf substance
  • Interior scale: commonly ~45–80 cm (18–31 in) with steady routines
  • Pet guidance: display out of nibbling reach

Placement Playbook

  • Stands out on pedestals or low consoles—let the leaf texture catch side light.
  • Pairs beautifully with smooth, matte planters; contrast with fine-leaf aroids for a curated mix.
  • Works as a grounding piece among brighter variegates.

Light & Climate

  • Illumination: diffused daylight or gentled morning rays; screen harsh midday sun to protect the bullate surface.
  • Humidity: comfortable room moisture around 55–70% RH with mild airflow.
  • Temperature: 20–29 °C (68–85 °F); keep away from cold drafts for crisp edges.

Water & Substrate

  • Hydration rhythm: water when the top layer feels dry to the touch; drench, then drain completely—no standing water.
  • Root zone: open, fast-draining blend—orchid bark + pumice/coarse perlite + coco chips; a light sphagnum accent for buffering.
  • Crown sits slightly high in the mix to discourage basal wetness.

Feeding & Upkeep

  • Nutrition: balanced fertilizer at ¼–½ strength during active growth; ease off as days cool.
  • Grooming: dust leaves occasionally so the sculpted texture reads clean.
  • Orientation: quarter-turn the planter every couple of weeks for even presentation.

Set-In Notes
Begin in cushioned light and ramp brightness gradually over 10–14 days. New flushes typically show the sharpest corrugation and richest dark tone.

What is the point? (SPOILER)
My heading echoes the adult Apu who, in the last movie in the trilogy says, "What is the use?" and allows the pages of his autobiographical novel to blow away in a wind. In the first two movies we enter the very real life of a rural Indian family whose members are all lovingly created by director and actors. But their story is rather sad. First Apu's young sister dies of illness, a fate shared much later by their father. Then the life of the mother dwindles away and Apu is left alone. The restoration of the nearly-destroyed films is a technological marvel, but I wondered if this tale would attain to anything of lasting value by the end. With the third and last movie in this series, I can reach a somewhat different conclusion. There is death and suffering in this last part too as Apu's wife dies early on but the entire narrative reaches a sudden and surprising resolution when Apu unites with his long-abandoned little boy who is himself a mirror of Apu growing up. There is something of a vacuous Asian experience in this cinematic telling but it doesn't really come to nothing as the stereotype might suggest. I recall that experience in David Lean's rendering of E.M.Forster's A Passage to India, a wonderful movie too but, like the novel, lending itself to earlier Western ideas about the East. An element of life, freedom, joy bursts upon us at the end of Ray's movie and transforms everything we have seen before. Yes, life is risky, unpredictable, filled with suffering, but it can still lead to something wonderful.

Masterpieces of Indian cinema
A memorable trilogy by Indian master filmmaker, Satyajit Ray. My personal favourite of the three is the first one, Pather Panchali (Song of the Little Road). It is a moving and extraordinary portrait of rural poverty in India, focused on the trials and tribulations of a struggling family. This trilogy is a must for the collections all lovers of world cinema.

Custom Mailer
Excellent item as you probably know . I'm THRILLED about the shipping all around & fast delivery to porch but I would like to compliment whomever is responsible for custom cardboard mailer it came in. I worried reading some of the major complaints from recent years about packaging issues and damages suffered to box & DVD's . It would appear that the manufacturers corrected this issue. I'm very happy with our distribution outlet in El Paso , Texas . I'm west 90 miles from in New Mexico and I think they terrific and professional. Not one order came damaged , late or poorly packaged so Thank You all responsible parties. Oh yeah , the ''Essential Fellini'' anthology ( minus a few films not added and missing correct documentary Ive seen about the director ) is your final replacement !

The best Fellini collection on the US market
The collection is a bit pricey, but in this case you get what you pay for. These movies have all been restored beautifully, and the box is a delight. The packaging is a fairly sturdy cardboard box. It is quite large, so you may have trouble fitting it onto a bookshelf. Mine protrudes about an inch past the end of my shelf. Inside the box is a large folio for the discs and two novel-sized books. One is a guide to each of the films, and the other is full of essays about Fellini and his work. The movies all look great. The blu-ray upgrades look great compared to my old vhs or dvd copies of some of his works. There was a new restoration of all of these films right before the set came out, and it shows. The black and white contrast looks crisp and the color films really pop. As for the quality of the films, you know that some of these are considered top films of all time. The lesser films are still good to great. I think that all of these films are worth watching over and over, and all of them have great special features. All in all, this set is very much worth it, especially during the July sale. I bought it half price, and I feel I got an incredible bargain. All in all, this is probably the best Criterion box set. Don't hesitate, buy it.
