Philodendron billietiae is a striking species from northeastern Brazil and Suriname with long, pendulous leaves that can reach up to 1 meter in length and 30 centimeters in width. The most characteristic feature is the orange-colored petioles that contrast beautifully with the matte, dark green leaves with light green to yellow veins and slightly wavy surfaces.

Unlike many other philodendron species, P. billietiae grows in sunny, exposed locations rather than in the shady undergrowth of the rainforest. It grows as an epiphyte or hemiepiphyte, almost always starting out on rocks before climbing up surrounding plants as it grows larger.

The plant usually has only a few leaves at a time and regularly sheds older leaves, leaving mature specimens with only the top part of the long stem green. With ample light, the leaves are held almost vertically.

This makes P. billietiae surprisingly well suited as a houseplant, it can handle dry air much better than many other philodendron species with long leaves. However, it needs warmth and a very bright location to grow well.
