Anthurium schlechtendalii

Anthurium schlechtendalii, commonly known as Pheasant Tail Anthurium or Giant Anthurium, is a striking tropical plant with large, glossy green leaves that grow in a rosette formation. Known for its impressive size and unique inflorescence, which features a long, curling spadix, this Anthurium adds an exotic, architectural look to both indoor and outdoor spaces. Reaching a height of 1–1.5 meters, it’s a stunning choice for tropical gardens, shaded patios, or as an indoor specimen plant in larger spaces.

Position

Pheasant Tail Anthurium thrives in partial to full shade, preferring bright, indirect light if grown indoors. It enjoys warm, humid conditions and should be placed in a sheltered spot protected from strong winds and direct sunlight, which can damage its large leaves.

Growth

This slow-growing Anthurium variety reaches a mature height of 1–1.5 meters with a spread of about 1 meter. Its large, paddle-shaped leaves and unique spadix make it a standout choice for creating a lush, tropical atmosphere in shaded garden beds or as a statement plant indoors.

Planting Guide

Anthurium schlechtendalii grows best in well-drained, rich soil that retains moisture. Plant in spring or early summer, allowing space for its large spread. For indoor planting, use a high-quality, well-draining potting mix, ideally with added organic material to promote moisture retention. Position at soil level, water well, and apply a layer of mulch to help retain moisture around the base.

Plant Care

Water regularly, keeping the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. This plant enjoys high humidity, so misting the leaves or placing a humidifier nearby is recommended, particularly for indoor settings. Fertilise every 4–6 weeks during spring and summer with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser to support healthy growth. Remove any yellowing or damaged leaves to keep the plant looking its best.

Cute for small dogs, but my Malinois made it extinct in minutes
I ordered this plush toy for my Belgian Malinois, and I went into it fully aware of what I was doing. With my dog, “plush toy” basically translates to “short lived prey simulation,” and I’m honestly okay with that because it helps her satisfy that prey drive in a safe, controlled way. She is always under direct supervision when she has toys like this. The toy is cute, and the concept is fun. The wings and textures are engaging, and I can see how the squeaker/crinkle would be exciting for a small or medium dog that actually plays with plush toys instead of immediately performing surgery on them. For my dog though, it was not durable in any sense of the word. Within about 30 seconds, she had both wings ripped off. Within five minutes, the entire thing was shredded and gutted. It did its job as an enrichment “destroy me” toy, but if you’re buying this expecting it to last, it won’t hold up to a strong chewer. It’s also not quite as plush and soft as it looks in the listing photos. It’s more on the lightweight side, which might be fine for smaller dogs, but it felt a bit less cozy than I expected. I’m giving it four stars because it is a cute toy and would probably be a fun, engaging option for the intended size range, especially dogs that aren’t power shredders. For large breeds or dogs with intense chewing styles (or Belgian Malinois energy), just know it’s going to be a very brief relationship.

Great dog toy
It's been played with and shook pretty good from a Border Collie and a poodle, no rips yet and it's been like a month.
